ok, i know i post a lot of questions but i am trying to get into this 351m-400 as much as i can. my new thing is... i plan on turning my 351m into a 400. i want to put on a set of 351c 4v heads. now with doing this, will i have to use the 351c headers? common sence tells me yes, but i would like to know for sure.

You know you can find everything you need to know just by using the search function and reading the posts already here. You will learn a lot just by spending some time looking and reading. Just about every possible configuration has been discussed and discussed...
The primary thing you need to know b4 you optimize your engine is the intended application. You build it to the purpose you have in mind. Shazam builds an engine almost the totally opposite way I do. We do have some common techniques but the engine purpose is way different.
...also, because of the 1.1" taller deck, the 351C 4v headers might have some clearance problems. i'm planning the same thing (400 4v) and i'm not going to be surprised if the headers rub somewhere. the 1.1" translates to about 3/4" up and 3/4" out - not a whole helluva lot, but considering how tight some hesders are anyway, it may be enough to cause problems. one thing i've thought about doing is modifying the engine mounts to move the motor down & back - that MIGHT help with header clearance, as well as giving a better front/rear weight balance for better launch at the dragstrip, and lower center of gravity for better handling on the street. i'll just have to try the headers and see how they fit.
If you want some stump pulling torque don't use the 351C 4V heads. Use the Cleveland 2V heads already on your engine. The 4V heads are for high RPM racing only. The 4V's did not perform well at low rpm's for street torque use.
Of course you would know this if you had read all the info available in this forum.
ok, so my stock 351m heads are the exact same as the 351c 2v. or should i just go out an buy a set of real 351c 2v heads? and would it be a good idea to mill the heads for a lil more compression? cause i plan on port and polishing them, and if i have some money left over i want bigger intake and exhaust valves put it.
They are not exactly the same, the exhuast ports are a little different, and unfortunately, the difference is towards the bad side.
However, they are not a bad head. I would keep the heads you have, flat mill around .020-.25 off them, put a 2.10 intake valve in them, a good single piece exhaust valve (standard size), and port them a little (mostly in the bowl area). I would especially pay attention to cleaning the combustion chambers up, they are prone to detonation anyways, and if you can at least polish the chambers, that will help eleviate that a little bit.

Ferrea makes one. That's what i run. The 2.10 valve is the same price as the rest of the valves in that line, around $12 each, if I remember correctly. It doesnt require much work to open the seat up enough to accomodate that valve, and that means there isnt a lot of extra grinding that needs done in the bowl area, so it's a pretty good compromise bewtween the stock size, and the 4v size.
I couldn't find the 2.1 valve from Ferrea for the 351C. Is it for a different application? Same AOL, stem size and retainer groove? I usually recommend the 460 intake valves for the 2V ports.
I beleive it was listed for a Yates head or something like that. I hope they havent stopped making them. I need to replace one I ruined in a mild explosion.
It wasnt the high dollar stainless steel line either, it was the next step down. If I had teh heads here I would get the part number for you.
I HAVE A 400 WITH EARLIER 351C 2V HEADS I'VE JUST PUT TOGETHER.THE GUY THAT DID THE MACHINE WORK ON THE HEADS RECOMMENDED GOING WITH 2.19 INTAKES AND 1.71 EXHAUST I WENT WITH STAINLESS STEEL VALVES FROM COMP CAMS THEY HAVE UNDER CUT STEMS FOR MORE FLOW AND ARE SWIRL POLISHED AND WERE RIGHT AT $200 BUCKS FOR BOTH SETS.I FOUND SOME INFO ON FLOW RATES AT http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/flowdata/cleveland.htm LOOKS LIKE A PRETTY GOOD SETUP FOR MY BRONCO STILL HAVE TO REBUILD MY TRANSMISSION BEFORE I GET THE MOTOR UP AND RUNNING.
