Hello all,
I'm going to be rebuilding my AOD transmission in the next month or two and I would really appreciate some help with the parts. The master rebuild kits I have found that come with the bands only come with one band. Does the AOD in my bronco only have one band? A little tech info here: 1989, 302 / AOD. If you can tell me what I'm missing here I'd really appreciate it. Thanks and take care.
Thanks Conanski, but I didn't find anything on there answering my question. All I could find on either of those sites were the OD band. Back to the original question: does anyone know if there are two bands like in most OD transmissions, or if there is just the one?

Read that lincoln page they have alot of info on beefing up the aod to the levels of
the newer trannies. Get a trans temp gauge and a good cooler don't reuse your old
one and the lines to it either, and spray out the rad cooler if you go through it real
good. The temp gauge($40.00) can save you from having to redo it sooner then you
want to!! Bigger tires call for a sooner fluid change then would be and is an often
overlooked thing on 4x4 rigs.
Thanks Blue beast. I already plan on replacing the hard lines, cleaning out the radiator tranny cooler and installing a secondary cooler. I have lost a few trannies in my day and rebuilt a couple as well. I've just never torn into an AOD. I'm fairly versed in changing of fluids too, especially on a 4x4 that sees nothing but trail use (I lost an A4LD in a B2 because i went into a water hole and filled the transmission with water through the vent). So I suppose you don't know how many bands are in the tranny either... ???
Yup, like torky said there is two bands in it. The overdrive band and the reverse band. I rebuilt mine a couple years ago. There are some pics of it in my gallery. It is a pretty straight forward job, I just took my time and had a good manual with pictures. I did not need any of the "special tools" either. I used Borg Warner steels and clutches and installed a transgo shift kit at the same time. It is a strong tranny now and shifts with authority! Good luck with your re-build!
Thank you Torky2. That's the info I needed. And Kameronth, thank you as well. Knowing that I won't have to buy and special tools is a huge help as well. I'll have to check out your gallery. Which manual did you use? I was thinking about picking up the ATSG guide.
Hey kameronth: When you said you didn't need to use any special tools, did you not replace the lip seals? According to everything I have read you can't replace them without the "special" protector/installer tools. I have found them for $95.
