I have an 89 Bronco with 8.8 rear end. Completely stock with 35in tires on it. The rear axle is leaking from the passenger side for the fourth time. I replaced the seal and it blew off so i cleaned the vent and replaced the seal and it came off. so i put a repair bering in and it stopped for about two months. Now it is leaking again. the guy at advance autoparts told me if the shafts were worn it would cause it to leak even if the seal and being are fine. Has any one ever heard this. Should i replace the shaft or replace the whole rear end with a junk yard rearend. I am waiting on income tax and might be able to buy a cheap replacement. anybody near san antonio got any ideas were to go besides pick and pull. if i could get a rear end under 1000.00 that would be great. any help please.
If you're not in a hurry, sometimes you can pick up an 8.8 for free. When I needed one, I had quotes from around $300 to around $700, and that with an LS differential.
i wonder if the axle is bent.that is the only thing that i have had contribute to axle seals not lasting.i took the axle in and chucked it up in a lathe and the flange had a pretty good wobble.
If the shaft is worn, it will be eazy to see when you have it off. The other possibility is the seal is not leaking, it may be where the seal meets the housing. The housing could be damaged when you took it apart previouslly.
You could get a full float kit. It would help with the tires also.
