Question IRS question...

...I found a dude locally sellin' a 1999 Cobra complete IRS, except for shocks...

He replaced the IRS with a solid rear due to the fact Cobrs run's in the NINES!!!

Anyway...I was wondering IF anyone has tried this swap in a '56 effie???

He's lettin' it go CHEAP...

Anybody know the track width? Hub to Hub?
Gear ratio?
Bolt pattern?
Might make a nice swap.

Thumbs up

The bolt circle is 5 on 4 1/2" the normal gear ratio is 3:73's I'll have to measure mine to see what the width is. We're building a '68 Mustang for a buddy of mine (check my gallery, it's pretty radical) we're not fortunate enough to have a cobra rear, but the track width should be the same as a solid axle? I'll check. I do know they are similar to the Cougar and T-bird IRS units, but I dont think the width is the same, but on the plus side is the bolt circle. Like I said it's a 4 1/2" bolt circle NOT like the T-bird which is 5 on 4 1/4" a real ODDBALL boltpattern.

I say BUY IT!!!!!

I checked that site; installation looks kinda like the Volare..notch the frame ,plenty of clearence on the wheels,..but no idea what the backspace on the wheels is.
Pretty BIG looking too, ride HT looks good though.
Maybe I'm just more of a traditionalist, but I'll stick with the straight axle. I'ts still gotta look cool.

Talking '56 effie & cobra irs

The 1999 Cobra IRS I was lookin' at seems like a good deal at $400.00
minus shocks...gotta make a decision before it's gone...

Seems like a pretty straight forward install..all things considered...

I wonder if MIG welding would be sufficient and structurally robust enough
to secure this setup???

OR...could just arc it...any thoughts???

-Thanks...

depends on how good of a welder you are with a Mig.

problem with Mig welding is that you can get a condition known as cold fusion where the weld looks all nice and pretty but the penetration is not deep enough so the weld is week. main reason they don't allow mig welding on pressure vessels (at least in Alberta).
if you are a good mig welder or know someone who is, Mig welds are just as strong as arc welding with less heat distortion and weld contamination.

welding in any suspension component should be done by qualified welders only, don't want to be running down the road, hit a bump or pothole and have your rear end break away at 60mph. wouldn't be pretty.

and $400 for a Cobra IRS is a steal. even if you don't use it, grab it anyways. they usually go for a lot more than that used. pretty rare piece.

MAN!! What a deal!!!! $400 that's cheap!!!! I wouldn't take that for mine out of a '92 Cougar! As far as the welding goes, I'd rather MIG it than stick it. That's a very good deal! I havent measured the width yet on our mustang, but I do know that the '99 up Mustangs were 1 1/2" wider than the '94 to ' 98 body styles.

THANKS!...very good point...Oh yeah...I CAN weld...schooled & trained...

But JUST before finsihing my certification pieces & sending them in to be cut apart I was diagnosed and had to stop...seems heat and MS do not go together wery well!

Anyway...I do understand weld integrety & robustness...just looking for some opinions..

Besides...my welding instructor is a 15+ year journyman welder from the
"Rouge Plant" and has offeren up his assistance & skills IF needed...so I think I'm covered...

-Thanks again...
