I'm planning a engine rebuild for my 72 SWB(3+1OD 3.25gear)
and would like some comments about the choices I've made..
Stock heads with 3 angle v.job (milled .015")
CompCam 270H
Weiand dual plane manifold
Carter 600cfm carb
Stock pistons
Mallory Unilite dizzy
Full length headers?????
Thanks in advance!!!!
I'm no expert on the M engines, but I've never heard anything good about them. A 400M certainly wasn't what your truck originally had. Why not replace it with a stroked small block or even a 460?
I happen to have a 400 laying in my garage at the moment and want more torque than the tired 302 currently in the truck. A 460 would be my first choice with a Tremec TKO behind it but my "toy" fund is at a all time low!
m.d.
If you have to buy pistons a "little" more compression would be a good idea. Without it you might have too much cam. Use a new timing gear set "with straight up" timeing, not 7deg retarded like stock.
400s are some bad mothers if built right!A weiand stealth intake would also do the engine justice.A roller cam retrofit kit has increased my performance all around the rpm band.

If you have not heard anything good about them then you must be new to this board. There are certainly some downfalls such as lack of high compression pistons, no factory 4V carb/intake, retarded timing chain, etc - but these can be overcome. There is a fellow that frequents this board that has gotten 800 HP (for truck pulling). Many of us prefer the 400 due to more torque. Sure, the 460 with the same mods would make more power but the 400 comes close.

Well apparently your right about not being an expert on the M engines.
With a little TLC and some home work you can get 500 Hp out of an 400 easy.
If figure if I can get 2 and 1/2 tons down the dragstrip in less than 15 seconds and still drive it daily and haul stuff when I want then the 400 is good motor. By the way I'm a mile above sea level and a friends Saleen Mustang only does 14.8.
