A Pillar Gauges

Ok, I need some help! I have a 2005 F350 6.0 PS Harley Davidson 4X4 super cab, long bed. I will be towing a 30’ travel trailer/ toy hauler (10000 lb GVWR) with 4 bikes in the trailer and one in the bed. I have installed a set of Autometer A pillar gauges EGT, trans temp and boost. Just wondering what to expect as normal levels and what are the danger points. Also are there other things we need to keep an eye on over long hauls? I also am running an Edge Evolution programmer and am wondering if is it OK to haul that amount of weight in the mid setting.

Thanks for all of your help!

Jon

EGT: don't go over 1250 for more then a few seconds if you can help it. 800-900 is roughly what you should see if your running a tuner.

Trans: 180-196 is about average for a good load depending on ambiant temp and terrain, when you start seeing 210-215 then I personally would be getting concerned, but that's subject to debate I'm sure.

Boost: That really depends on your driving style. When I'm towing I try to keep it under 15 unless I'm coming up a long hill and it just demands more, but I try to keep it under 15(more for economy reasons while towing).

Oh I could suggest alot of other gauges that in my mind are worth while to have and to be able to monitor your truck's vitals, but that depends on how deep your pocketbook is.

Most would say to get custom tunes from Matt or Eric and to do away with the edge as it has a bad reputation on these motors particularly the tranny. Some have done well with it, but most have not. I would say get custom tunes(from Matt, but then I'm partial to the guy(shameless plug I know, but I'm hoping to get some brownie points when he does my turbo)), however if you stick with the edge and hauling as much as you lbs wise, I would have it in the lower setting for sure and watch your vitals. I hope this was helpful.

I posted some a while back (and have since modified them a little - primarily the fuel pressure). The thread it is in is the last one in the Tech Folder. These are for stock. I will post one on a "tuned" truck. As always - these are up for debate and discussion (the more the better).

Too long - will post in a couple of threads, or give you the link to the thread.

Bismic, you must have your fuel pressure shimmed to get those numbers.

Daddgonemadd - appreciate the feedback.

I do not have gauges yet - I got the fuel readings from a friend. He stated that for his truck it is 60 psig at idle and drops to 50 when normal driving. Then, when hard accelerating, it drops to 45. Tex25025 had indicated that I was probably 5 psig high also. Can you give me more typical #'s? I also recall reading on the FDDTS web site that the low pressure alarm point (stock) set by Ford is 45 psig.

thanks!

If I remember right, mine was 45psi stock. Now with a bb shim it is 61. How much it drops really depends on your foot and how hot a tune. I was told not to go below 40.

You can see the pressures that bismic listed with the FASS system and they will be constant no matter the tune(atleast that's the experiance that I have had and I'm running a hybrid race tune with bigger injectors). Now if you just use something like the ITP RR kit, you can see the drop in pressure due to hotter tunes after so long because the stock pump takes a toll with the higher pressure.

That is correct, 40 is the point that most recommend not going under, some recommend higher(and I believe that higher rating is better).

Thanks Tex and Mark! That was the information I was looking for! The truck is all stock with the exception of the Edge. What is the custom tunes from Matt or Eric? If that is a better / safer option compared to the Edge I am all for that. I am basing my baby’s long life on your past experience.

Thanks for all of the great info!

Custom tunes are tailor made to your personal driving habits and if you plan on performance upgrades such as injectors or turbos all you'll need to do is tell them and they'll tweak your tunes to match those. I have only dealt with Matt personally at Spartan Diesel(who are site sponsors) and he has done wonders for my truck, unfortunately he is pretty busy since he has struck out on his own which is a testament to how good he is. Eric I have heard equal good things I just have no dealings with him, but I feel comfident in saying that both will treat you equally right. If you have any specific questions or concerns please feel free to pm me thru here to ask me from my own experiance, I'll be more then happy to answer them as best I can. I do feel confident in saying you'll like custom tunes a whole lot more and I had started out much like you except I had BullyDog setup, which wasn't bad but it wasn't as good as I'm experiancing now.
