Snowplow Question

I have a '99 Explorer Sport and I want to put a SnoWay 22 Series plow on it. It will be for personal use and some residential plowing in town. My question is.....which size plow should I get? I have 3 options.....6ft or 6'8" or 7'6". I'm thinking the 6ft will be too narrow and 7'6" plow will be too large but I'm not sure. What do you think?

I think the 6'8" is what a guy down the street has on his '93 Explorer. If it is, it would be the one I would recommend. I talked to him one day about how it did and he was talking about the widths. He said he got the middle size because it fit the width of the truck better with a little overhang on the edges. He said the shorter one didn't cut his tire path as well.

I'll be in and out of town the next couple of weeks, but if I see him and remember, I'll check for you...

See? I told you Keith. My recommendation would be the 6'8" as well. You may find the 7.5 is too big and not really needed for your situation.

I had a measuring tape out yesterday just to get a sense of how big the blade would be and yeah the 6'8" should be plenty big enough. Matt, it's not that I didn't believe you but I was curious what other Explorer owners were using. I'm out in the country and there's a couple subdivisions out here with what I guess you could call 'estate lots' and their driveways are a little larger than the ones in town. I could just as easily focus my efforts out here so a bigger plow might be better. I guess I have decision to make. Thanks for the input.

Remember, bigger plow=more snow to push=transmission strain.

Yes I was aware of that but thank you Aquanaut20. Any idea what your plow weighs with the mounting hardware? The 7'6" blade with all the mounting hardware only weighs 285lbs and from what I've read that's pretty light and shouldn't be any problem for the transmission or the suspension. I guess the question I have to answer is whether 6 inches will make my life easier or more difficult.

It was not the weight of the plow, but the amount of snow you will push that stresses the tranny, my son blew his even with an extra large cooler.

Ok I think I've made up my mind.....thanks. Now I just have to talk to my cousin who is the local SnoWay dealer and see what kind of deal he'll give me.

I made some calls this morning and I was absolutely flabbergasted at what these things are going for......$5400 plus options, installation and tax. A little too much for my pocketbook.
