Thanks Mr Baker. Can you give any advice on where to start and how to check each part so I'm not just replacing them all?
Truck won't fit in my garage so I'm on my back in a frozen driveway and I can't really get a good check on the universals.
It looks like I have 2 Us on the front and 2 Us on the rear and a slip joint on the rear drive shaft.
I'm thinking it is likely in the rear shaft because I hardly ever use the 4X4.
there are a few ways to get an idea but aren't alway acurate
the first is shake slip joint to see if there is any slack between slip yoke and spline, this is a good place to find viberation on high milage trucks
jack the rear up and turn drive shaft and visiually check eack u-joint for any rust trails around cups and at cross then try to shake to check for loosness
check for excessive play in carrier bearing
sometime a u-joint will still be bad and not show up without pulling drive shaft and checking movement
High mileage is not a problem, 45K. Rust from road salt is a major factor here in the NY mountains. There is quite a bit of scaleing rust present on the drive shafts themselves so it won't surprise me if rust rather then physical wear is the culprit.
I might just get the new U joints for the rear and replace them to see if this fixes the problem and check the price of the slip joint or bearings and go from there on that part. I don't feel any loosness but honestly don't know what I should be trying to feel.
I searched for a vibration for about 100k miles. Finally broke down and took the driveshaft out and took it to a balancing service. Along with being out of balance, the first yoke behind the carrier bearing was warn. Not the spline area, but one of the seats that the u-joint cup sits in. It was like driving a brand new truck off of the show room floor. For a total cost of $120.00.
Thanks Markadeck, I will be dropping it as soon as weather permits and checking all the parts. The U joints are about $15 each so no big deal there to just replace. The carrier bearing is unknown at this point and I will look into ballancing.
That certainly sounds like what I am experiencing.
Have you heard of any of these service bulletins or recalls?
