Hello, I have a '76 ford f150 w/ a 390. I am wondering what size/type carburetor would be best for my setup. 390fe block, stock--crank,pistons,rods. stock heads that are ported and polished on exhaust side. hedman truck hedders. lunati bracket master 292 dur. .554 inch lift hyd. camshaft. edelbrock streetmaster intake w/spacer. msd 6al, blaster 2 coil, billet distributor. c6 tranny w/2300 stall convertor. 9" ford rear w/ 3.70 ratio. It has a barry grant demon 750 vac secondary carb on it now, tune and re-tune and i keep fouling plugs. too much carb??? was told by several people (not on here) that the 750 would be fine.. then several others are telling me now that i bought the carb it is too much! Hold out your hands cuz i'm about ready to pitch this carb out the window! Thanks
NO, that carb is okay. Heck I run a stock Holley 750 on my stock 352!! Runs great, though I never get enough air to open the secondaries. It is still basically a 375 CFM TWO barrel.
First check to see if the secondaries are set open at all. Most of those "race" carbs are set pretty rich. There should be a small screw that you can set how far the secondaries are open at idle. Close them off and see how it reacts. Do you get any reaction out of the idle mixture screws?? Does it foul plugs just idling? or just cruising around? What power valve do you have in it?
Yep should be an Idle curcuit for the secs if I remember right...check what Larry said...and if your not happy. I'll rebuild the spare holley 650 I have and trade you!! LOL..
thanks for the reply guys... yes it loads up at idle, so much you just about need a respirator to breath...at w.o.t. it runs good on "non fouled plugs" i don't remember what size p.v. is in it. it will be tomorow untill i can pull the carb. i'll let ya'll know what i find out.. thanks again
