i have a 51 f1..my column came out of an older chevy van...its 30 inches long and fits perfectly....i tried one out of a new van and it was 36 inches and way too long....
check some of the square bodied jeep suv's late 80's early 90's...i believe they are the right length ...and most gm colums of the 80's should fit....cadillac, buick etc.....
my brother has a 51 chevy pu with a cadillac tilt,telescoping column..real nice..tks, ashlandcat
I used an early 90's Jeep Cherokee column, which is just a GM column. 30" long, cut the mounting flange off the bottom, and poke it thru the floor. See my or Bobbys gallery for mounting brackets. Borgeson makes u joints for both the column and the Jag front end, plus they have a telescoping steering column to mate the two. -Rusty
My column is out of a 1989 Blazer. Made a few mods but the length was right. It had a column shifter but that is easy to eleminate and fill in with bondo so it is not even noticed. I got it fom a junk yard for $50. I am using the steering wheel and replaced the key lock. The wiring harness I have has all the connectors for a GM column so I think I did ok. Will post a picture later.
I was going to use the one out of the IROC but it has a sloppy tilt joint. I don't like that.
Pretty easy to fixif you really want to use it, I saw an episode of 2 guys garage and they fixed that right up. It involves a little disassembly, and loctiting 4 screws.
Rusty,
A sloppy tilt joint is an easy fix. You have to dissassemble the top part of the column but its really not a huge scary job. I've done tons of them over the years and I could walk you through it if you need it.
I think I might even have alink or to to articles posted on the net, I'll see if I can find them.
I used a tilt/tele column out of a '80 caddy eldo .Of course some fab is required but SVF has a $40 column mt . that works great. This column has no shifter and the elec. connection mates up to their harness when switching to 12 V .
Thanks fellas; I would like to use the 89 GM column that I have. (save $$$). I think I'll try to fix it. All I can do is screw it up. Right.
Bobby; I might take you up on your offer. First I'll see what happens.
mytbtruck ; One of my daily drivers is an 89 blazer. Never thought about it I'll do some measuring and see if it is the same as my 89 IROC. Thanks. OH I like the way yours fits. Looks good.
Rusty,
Cool, just let me know and I'll see if I cn dig up my diagrams. I did find a way to cheat the job a little bit so you don't have to take the column completely apart (big help if its in the car, not such a big issue on the bench)
