I am tired of the Variable Venturi crap, so I've been looking for a new carb. Ideally I was searching for an Autolite 4100 with the auto trans lever, but they all seemed out of my budget or they were seriously molested.
Cruising eBay I stumbled upon the occasional Motorcraft Holley, but that wasn't quite what I was looking for. Then I found one for $12.50 one day and jumped on it. I found out shipping was $30 after I bought it, and started the process of kicking myself. Hopefully it would an okay carb, though.
It's a 4180C as far as I know. LIST# 50262-2, E5HE-9510-MC. Doing a little research tonight, I realize it's off an '85 or '86 460, CA-emissions. So it probably won't be matched to my mild 302 (basically a carb'd '86 5.0L HO).
What should I be expecting to change when tuning time comes? MPG would be a good thing... maybe an emissions carb wouldn't be so bad?
That looks like it's off of a heavy duty truck and it has a governer on it. Not a good performance carb at all. It's made for a large dump truck or something with a 429 4V from the looks of it. Hense the E5H 1985 H=heavy truck.
I could be wrong, but every carb that I have seen that looks like that is heavy truck carb with a governer on it. I don't think it's a 4180 either, those usually have vent tubes on the bowls for the charcol canister.
I don't see a govenor. What I do see is an electric choke, a choke pull-off, vacuum secondary and a throttle dashpot. I think you have those items confused.
I'll openly admit I'm fairly new to Holley's. I'd seen other Holley's before with what I thought was a governor, but it could have been a manual choke setup or something.
I see the dashpot and I see the automatic choke cap. I thought the diaphram in the back (on what would be the passenger side) was the choke pull off (but I could be wrong). And the diaphram looking thing in front of the automatic choke is the thing I don't know what is.
If it was off a 460, it's probably going to need some larger jets (since it would be going on a 302), right?
I have several older, non-emission Holley's around the house. Is it possible I could transfer the auto trans lever to one of them?
The thingy in front of the electric choke is the choke pull off; behind the choke is the sec. vac. diaphram. The thing on the other side is the dashpot.
That looks just like the one that was on my 1986 F250 4x4 460 Ca emissions. beetle is correct. What I don't see is the fuel bowl vent tubes. But the holes if not plugged can be plugged with small freeze type plugs. The BIG problem with the 4180 is kits are as a rule expensive, & you need to install a power valve ( P.V.) blow out protection device. The 4180 uses a 2 stage P.V. They are about $30. You can use a single stage P.V. if you choose. Jets, P.V. will fit from a 4160. Other than those not much else interchanges. Gaskets are different, I can't remember but maybe the bowl transfer tubes are the same. But bowl, & metering plates gasket are different. As for performance they where used on the Mustang 5.0 HOs in the 80s. I believe 1986 was the first fuel injection on the Mustang. I drove an 85 Mustang GT and as I remember it was pretty quick.
You might be right. I know that the Mustang 4180 doen't have all of that extra pull-off and such on it. I have one off of an 85 GT HO. They were used on Mustangs from 83-85 on the GT HO 5-speed cars.
It also appears that someone has already knocked out the idle mixture screw plugs on the front side of the base plate. There should be two more on the back side I believe.
Like mentioned, it has unique internal gaskets and an extra bowl balance tubethat runs internally front to rear. The Mustang carb came with 622 jets which are emissions legal, exact sized 62 jets. Not sure what the jets are in yours.
It's not the best performance carb, but it will work, it will just need some tuning more than likely.
My ex girlfriend from years ago had a 85 GT and I got tired of fooling with the 4180 and put a 4160 on it and it ran much better.
