vacuum leak ?

for the past 3 or 4 weeks i have heard what i could only describe as a vacuum leak, seems to be behind the center of the dash. goes away under acceleration and is most noticeable at 15 to 1700 rpm. position of controls (defrost etc.) does not seem to make any difference. Help Please.

2001, DRW, 6 Speed, 2WD, 350, all stock

Does it go away after the truck is fully warmed up.If so its normal. Its your exhaust back pressure valve{ebpv} working properly.
And welcome to the forum

unfortunately, no.
consistent except when there is a change in throttle (i.e. while accelerating or decelerating)

If it were a vacuum leak, I think your heat and air would would not work correctly. The dampers work off of vacuum.

heat and air do work correctly,
just that i am not that familiar with diesel engines/trucks, this is my first, and the sound is loud enough to hear while driving, and it bugs me not knowing what may be causing it.
i have had the truck for about a year now and only in the past month or so has the noise been noticeable to me.
thanks for the welcome to the forum and the replies.

If you are sure it doesn't go away when it is COMPLETELY warmed up.And it takes a long time for these trucks to get that way{about 15-20min.}.Then I would check the only vacuum lines there are behind the dash. Those are for the air handler vents. There is really not much vacuum on these trucks.if it is a vacuum leak it shouldn't be too hard to find. The reason i keep harping on the ebpv is because your description sound exactly where it should be.And what mine sounds and acts like.

You could unplug the vacuum pump and go for a drive, If you still hear it, at least you will know that it's not the vacuum.

Do you still have the factory air intake? I just changed mine to the 6637 air filter and it sounds now what could be perceived as a vacuum leak

thanks again for the replies,
the truck may not be fully warmed up as i have about a 30 min ride to work and this time of year it is cooler in the mornings. i will pay closer attention tomorrow both on the drive in and the drive home.
may try unhooking the pump tomorrow after work, cant hurt to check it out.
