have a 1989 f150 351 5 speed with only 4th gear the rest do nothing. you can feel them but nothing happens. was wondering if anyone has ever had one apart. and if so is it fixable or just put another one in .
EZ way to tell, without gettin' down and crawlin' under.
How the shift lever is retained into the shift tower is the key.
The cap that retains Warner shift levers screws off/on.
The cap that retains New Process shift levers is held to the tower by two pins...so it twists off/on by a 1/4 turn. Push down..then twist! Because ppl don't know this, this cap usually is buggered. B8T-7220-D = still available from Ford.
In this particular case, because of the application ('89 F150)...the transmission likely is the ToyoKogyo (Mazda) 5 speed overdrive.
