I just finished replacing the mains and rod bearing in my 351M.
put it all back together with new oil pump and pickup. When I first turned it on it knocked real bad for about 10 minutes. Knocked bad before too. After about 10-15 minutes and a short drive it sound pretty good. A little better than it did before the change. The only thing I can figure is the thrust bearing was not aligned just write. Any Ideas?
Im not sure what it was. This is the first time doing this.
I was very carfull and meticulus. The truck sat for two days prior with out being started. It has sat before and not done that.
But it seems to be fine. Its even quiter now than when I first posted. Im just going to keep and eye on it for a feww days.
Oil pressure is gerat: 75 @ 2000RPM/ 50@ idle.
My truck did the same thing, only it sat for a week with the pan off waiting for a timing set to arrive. I thought for sure I had spun a bearing the way it was sounding but it began to quiet and pressure was great, around 75psi. Took it for a drive and it quited down totally. I was all over the engine listening for the noise, seemed louded on the top side. All I could figure is the lifters were completly dry...

Did you say you had a knock before, and is that why you put a new set in?
If it is, it's possible that you had a bad rod bearing, and the crankshaft is also bad. I see this a lot where people install new bearings because they have a knock or spun bearing, they replace the bearing but forget about the other 2 items. The conn. rod and the crankshaft. The rod diameter has .001" tolerance and same with the crankshaft. It just takes a few thousands to make a knock.
If it was a lot of clattering it was probably the lifters. they will make noise on the first start even if you prelubed them. Should have went away in 2 o 3 minutes.
I know .... this is a really old thread, but I was just browsing to see how my two experiences 31 years apart compared to others, and this hit a nail. In 50 more years, it'll still be on point ... as to clattering lifters after air and oil pumped through.
A lot of times bearing jobs don't work or last long because the main bearing bores and or rod bearing bores have become tapered and out of round through the years. Putting new bearings in a bore that is messed up just won't work.
