I finally picked up my new keypad for my 04 X. After calling all of my local and not so local ford dealers for the part and pricing for installation I about crapped! The part went from $75 to $105 all within a 50 mile radius. Oh and all the shops said I couldnt change it myself but would be willing to do it for $200 to $250. Thanks to this forum I didnt get ripped off. I called a local lincoln garage and got the key pad for $65. I replaced the old one in fifteen minutes! No kidding! All my ford dealers said I would need to program it. What the heck is wrong with these dealerships? It just makes American carmakers look worse. I never had this kind of trouble with my wifes Audi or their dealers... Come On Ford Wise Up!!! Sorry had to vent...
Unfortunately EVERYTHING is costing more and more these days...I'm not defending the 'answers' you got from the stealerships...because people that DON'T have the skills unfortunately DO have to pay those prices!
Just to give a different perspecitve on American manufacturers...our Grand Caravan JUST came out of warranty 3 weeks ago by 'months' not 'miles'. It is my own fault for not taking in the van sooner...but the power steering started really talking to us this past week...it was groaning a bit prior but the dealer couldn't verify the issue.
But we take it in OUT OF WARRANTY now and you guessed it...the rack is SHOT!...all I had to do was call Chrysler and they extended the warranty for all to be covered under warranty...I know what you are thinking...why in the world would a rack crap out with only 30K miles on it...my thoughts too...but Chrysler/Dodge is STANDING BEHIND their product...even though technically I am out of warranty...it isn't a 37 month warranty...
Now mind you had they NOT stood behind it...you bet I'd be complaining...so I have to praise them too for their actions.
Again, I am GLAD you got your situation figured out...
WoW! Seems like I was right on! It was pretty much common sense that the keypad wouldn't have to be programmed the last time we discussed it, just as I suggested. All the keypad does is send the door code to the computer.
OK, now for my bill: Initial consultation here...... $35.00 "Best Guess" fee............ $12.00 Follow up post here just now..... $25.00
TOTAL: $72.00 1 1/2% interest per month if not paid in 90 days.
Yep the first Ford Garage charged me a big $45 to hook it up to their computer. Then they gave me a quote for another $250 to replace the "faulty" keypad. I walked, but was out $45.
