Ok so many discussions over the past 2 weeks about MPG's. I think a major itme that has not been brought up and will fluctuate the numbers drastically are type of drivers we are. I know not everyone will jump on the throttle ,but then I know some us drive our X's WFO ( wide f ing open). This will vary our MPG's that we all get. I can say from my experince if I have my chip on perf mode and get on it and I can use 40 gallons within 350 miles easily. Nut if I drive conservatively with shifts between 1850 and 2200 I can go 550 - 620 with mixed driving ( town and highway). How does everyone else drive their X?
Like a baby, I hate to see the tach above 2200 rpm when I am empty. Sometimes people beep at me because I move off the line so slow. I dont care I am in no hurry. I try to keep it at 65mph or lower on the HWY also.
My biggest gas waste is having to warm the truck up in the morning, letting it sit idle for 5-8 minutes really kills me. But it was like 18deg this morning so I have no choice IMHO.
I drive mine pretty conservative trying to keep the rpms low also. I have the 4.30 gear so at 65 I am over 2000 rpms and that is the fastest I like to go, when traffic allows I set the cruise to 60mph getting an avg of 14 mpg (one time high of 16 mpg). One day I was running late and set it at 75 mph and was rewarded with less than 12 mpg.
Driving style has alot to do with MPG. Since installing a Scan Gauge in my Ex, I have been able to better monitor what effects my mileage.
I found that allowing the Ex to coast to red lights, coast on hills, etc...basically looking ahead and allowing the truck to roll has made a big improvement in my mileage. As you al know, start-stop driving kills any attempt at mileage.
I also found when towing that speed was hurting me. On a recent trip to MI, I set the cruise and went 30 miles. Then, reset the cruise and the Scan gauge and checked it again after 30 miles. At 70MPH, 6.5MPG...at 60MPH 9.5.
I think I drive mine fairly easily. It normally shifts at 2000-2500 RPM. Expect 2500-3000 when driving on the more hilly backroads. Expect 5500 when someone pisses me off.
Really, I normally drive the truck what I consider to be pretty easy normally. The biggest problem with the 4R100 in this sense is that it doesn't have an "empty" mode where it will shift at 2000 RPMs normally and let the torque of the engine motivate the truck. The transmission is geared more towards towing, and so it shifts at too high of an RPM by my standards when there is no load. With the 4.30s this is worse, 3.73s might be easier.
On the highway, I normally set the cruise at 70 mph (~2500 RPM), except for when I convince myself I need to get where I'm going quickly, when I got 80-90 (~3000 RPMs). I get 12.5-14.5 (mostly depending on the season) at 70, and about 11.5 at 80-90.
As to warming the truck up in the winter? The V10 doesn't really need it. I'll start the truck up first thing when I get in (I always do that), and then let it idle while I'm getting set up for the drive. If it's a day when I need 4x4 to get up my driveway or need to brush the snow and scrape the ice off the windshield (like this morning), then I do that while the truck is idling. That all gives more than enough time for the oil to circulate and the pistons to start getting warmed up. Once I get up my driveway (which I go at it easy, and the truck doesn't go above 2000 RPMs for that), it's downhill for the next mile or so, so that gives it an easy warm-up time.
The worst tank I've seen is 9.8, but that was towing a small trailer in primarily city traffic with a lot of stop-and-go. Overall, considering the size of the truck and the engine, I don't think it does too badly. It would be nice if I could see 15 mpg, though...
AK I must say that is amazing MPG for the 6.0 I have been told and have seen it being some friends of mine are crusin the 6.0 X and they never get really good MPG. Definately keep that one she is a gem. Right now I am checking my MPG in my tow/perf mode to get an idea and then I will run a tank without the chip to see the difference. Right now it seems as though I am getting about 14 - 15 but I saw a quick decrease yesterday evening using 4WD with the snow and sleet crap we got here in NJ.
All I can say is you gotta pay to play. A truck that weighs 7000 + lbs designed to carry 8 people will never get GOOD mileage. Personally, the X that I have to drive has a lightbar and sirens and is driven pretty much bttw all the time and tax dollars pay for the fuel. Impressive truck tho, I've never been in any 4x4 that plowed through the snow like this one does.
