Electrical Problem

Well went out to the 2002 Expedition a few days ado and was unable to put the truck in gear. Thought the brake solendoid was bad but then noticed I had no interior lights, wipers, 4x4, power windows and window defrosters. Checked the interior fuse panel and found fuse number 15 was blown. It's a 5 amp fuse. Changed it and problem solved. Today the same problem. Change the fuse and it instantly blows again. Anyone know what this could be? I'm at a total loss and any help would be great appreciated.

Probably a faulty (shorted) Brake Pedal Position switch or a wiring fault at the switch's harness connector. Inspect the WHITE/YELLOW wire at the switch for chafing or any other damage.

Thanks Steve I'll give that a check. Does it just seem weird to me that all those things would be on a 5 amp fuse?

Well I didn't see anything off hand with the brake solenoid. It seems this fuse may power the GEM module. Anyone have a wiring diagram or know where I can find one on the net. My Chilton does not have this fuse covered in the wiring diagram. Thanks.

The 5A fuse:

1) provides power to the GEM module

2) provides a switched input to the speed control module to signal the pedal has bben pressed.

I wasn't referring to any solenoid. I specifically referred the the pedal position switch.

Thanks Steve. I changed the fuse tonight and was unable to make it blow. I did notice each time I pressed on the brake pedal the interior lights would flicker slightly. Is that normal? A month ago I had a remote start system installed and hope that's not the problem. I noticed the wires heading to the electric motor that adjusts the pedals was starting to chaff. I'll check again on the pedal position switch and might just replace it for safe measure.

Would you rule out the GEM module causing the short? Thanks again Steve.

No. That would indicate an abnormal current draw.

At this point, I can neither rule in or out any of the possibilities.

Since it's an intermittent, you'll likely loose some hair (or at least turn it gray). I rarely support the replacing of parts without a definitive diagnosis, but in this case, I'll make an exception and suggest that the switch is likely enough faulty to justify replacing it.

Well finally figured out what was wrong with my electrical system. Seems my windshield has been leaking water on the GEM module and fuse box. Guess the fuse box is all corroded and needs replaced as well. Ford is going to charge me around $1,000 to replace both the GEM module and fuse box, and to reseal the windshield. AArrggg. Just wanted to share.
