I finally turned over the big 300k miles.
Never would have thougth it would have gone the distance and still going but it did.
Now I have to decide when to say enough is enough and pull the engine before I blow it up and have it remanufactured.
It has more than paid for itself.
dude its not gonan blow up, just take care of it change the oil every 3000 miles and you should be fine, its not going to brake down, take care of it. get a tune up on the old baby.
well, it's not really showing any signs of NEEDING to be rebuilt but should I push it to the point of needing it. My thougths are to be proactive.
I have noticed that sometimes it will suddenly use a lot of oil for no apparent reason. However, I just fill it back up and keep going. But, it does not do that very often.
Most times it uses maybe half a quart between changes.
Well, I guess I'LL keep driving it for awhile longer and keep and eye on it.
It just makes me nervous to think a gasoline engine can just keep on running with such high mileage.
half a quart per OCI?
heck, mine's used 1qt per OCI since it had 25k on the clock.
"normal consumption" for 5.4L
Same here...mine uses between 1 and 1.5 quarts between changes (4k miles)...and it's only got 107k on it.
If I were you, I'd try for 400K before I thought about a rebuild. And even then...hone the cylinders, new rings, new water pump, cam chain and tensioners, and new gaskets...maybe new crank and cam bearings...and she should be ready for another 400K...
Congrats on the milestone! Mine will be long gone before then...Haha!

I'll change the PCV and maybe....EGR valve for good measure since it's never been changed.
I may even check the compression of each cyclinder and hope for the best.
My 98 is looking like it will go to the 300,000 make as well. Regular maintenance will keep these engines running a long long time. But don't forget there is more than the engine to think about. There are some other big money parts that can fail as well. Just as soon as you put a new motor in it something else could go wrong and then you have more money tied up in the truck than it's worth. I would drive it untill you hear a big boom then get a new one. Keep in mind a 400,000 mile truck that went boom isn't going to have much of a trade in value. A while ago mine used 2.5 quarts of oil between oil changes (5000 Miles) twice and then stopped using oil? I checked the PCV and it was OK. Never did figure it out but it's not using oil now.
