Do you know what they do with motors that can't be fixed by boring them to .060" over? The bore them .080", and sell them to AZ. These things are junk. You can also have different bores in the same engine, plus, for some moronic reason, they get filled with Mobil 1 synthetic at the factory. Use this as your break-in oil, and you will regret it. It doesn't allow the rings to seat properly, so you will wind up with an underpowered smoker, but by then your 12 month, 12k mile warranty is up, so they don't care.

Please don't take this wrong, I agree that AZ motors are pretty much junk, but on the Mobil 1 remark I do. Mobil 1 will not cause your engine to fail to break in properly; this is a myth of astronomical proportions. Mobil one IS factory fill on many high performance cars like Corvette, Viper, and Aston Martin just to name a few. If that were the case, they would have a ton of lawsuits on them by now. Mobil 1, or any truly synthetic lubricant is not more "slippery" than mineral base oils, only a molecular level, has the oil molecules been manipulated to be of like size and shape and that gives the oil superior flow characteristics. So please don't buy a AutoZone junker, but don't be afraid of putting Mobil 1, or any other quality synthetic in your new automobile.

I may be wrong but I think the engines that come from the factory are all test-fired and run in on regular oil. Once they breakin is over the oil/filter are changed and synthetic is put in for the customer.

Don't ever use synthetic oil for breakin. Mosts machine shops still recommend non detergent.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Dec-02 AT 02:39 AM (EST)]rustynuts, Are you comfortable with building it yourself?

Nothing beats gaining the experience and the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

You already took on one pretty good chore.

Patience, a decent place to work, a good manual, access to a good machine shop, and more patience, will take you all the way.
