Don't know how much a trans rebuilt would cost, but Kelly Blue . com www.kbb.com says it is worth about :
Condition Value

Excellent
$7,600

Good
$6,910

Fair
$6,030

That is with a manual trans .. that is working..with 157K miles

Iam not sure how you got thoses figures. I came up with
<TABLE id=priceCondition cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=conditionSelected id=ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ContentPlaceHolderBody_Conten tPlaceHolderMiddle_ContentPlaceHolderMiddle_rptVal ueSummary_ctl00_conditionColumn style="PADDING-LEFT: 6px">Excellent
</TD><TD class=valueSelected id=ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ContentPlaceHolderBody_Conten tPlaceHolderMiddle_ContentPlaceHolderMiddle_rptVal ueSummary_ctl00_valueColumn align=right>

$12,575

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=dotsnomargin style="PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px; POSITION: static" colSpan=2></TD></TR><TR><TD rowSpan=2></TD><TD class=valueText id=ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ContentPlaceHolderBody_Conten tPlaceHolderMiddle_ContentPlaceHolderMiddle_rptVal ueSummary_ctl02_conditionColumn style="PADDING-LEFT: 6px">Good
</TD><TD class=value id=ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ContentPlaceHolderBody_Conten tPlaceHolderMiddle_ContentPlaceHolderMiddle_rptVal ueSummary_ctl02_valueColumn align=right>$11,640
</TD></TR><TR><TD class=dotsnomargin style="PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px; POSITION: static" colSpan=2></TD></TR><TR><TD rowSpan=2></TD><TD class=valueText id=ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ContentPlaceHolderBody_Conten tPlaceHolderMiddle_ContentPlaceHolderMiddle_rptVal ueSummary_ctl04_conditionColumn style="PADDING-LEFT: 6px">Fair
</TD><TD class=value id=ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_ContentPlaceHolderBody_Conten tPlaceHolderMiddle_ContentPlaceHolderMiddle_rptVal ueSummary_ctl04_valueColumn align=right>$10,415</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Iam going to sell a 99 f250 2wd soon and was looking to get 10k for it. This truck is in perfect shape. Anyway 6K is kinda high for a truck with that many miles and will need a trans.

A good trans rebuild from someone like BTS or John Wood will run about $4k, so keep that in mind when figuring things...

An '01 will more-than-likely have the mechanical diode, and if it does, there WILL be more hard parts involved.

There is approx $350-$400 more cost for parts to replace the one way clutch and associated parts.

The value depends on a lot of other things. Is it an XL, XLT, or Lariat. How's the rest of the truck? 157K isn't a lot of miles if it's been well cared for. The truck probably has been at least resonably cared for if the stock tranny made it to 157K. That's about 50K more than the average one lasts.

Bottom line is how do you feel about it? You're the one that has to put up the money.
