Hello. I just purchased a 01 EX. 4.6L. I was wondering if i needed a trans. cooling system. I am only going to tow my 74 beetle on occasion, and only short distances. Thanks for your help.
I'd highly recommend adding a tranny cooler if your rig only has the one that's part of the radiator. My 94 E-150 ate 2 E4OD trannies on it's way to 80K miles, the first at dealer expense, the second at mine. The stock Ford cooler isn't big enough and the trans costs $2000+ to replace. I added a 4 row radiator, a 24K gross weight trans cooler(the biggest I could find) a temp gauge, and a TransGo shift kit. 65K miles later the trans hasn't skipped a beat and the trans temp has never been above 220deg (hit 220 once going from Utah to Colorado over the pass - total vehicle/trailer weight was 12,500lbs). Towing my 69GT350 (5200# w/trailer) it usually stays right at 180-200 deg. Add the cooler - you and your wallet will be glad you did!
