90' E-150 Stalling issue

Hey all,

Ive been helping a buddy of mine with his van. He has a 90 E-150 with a 5.0 in it. (I know its not a F-150, but its the same basic arcitecture). It was stalling out on him when he came to stop lights (only when the vehicle is warm). He determined that the Ignition control module on the distrubitor was bad (his trouble shooting, not mine). I replaced it for him. While I had the distrubitor out, we noticed the contacts on the cap and rotor were realy carboned over, and looked bad. That seemed to confirm the diagnosis. Changed the module, replaced the distrubitor and re-timed the ignition. We fired it up, and once the van warmed up it just died on us. He then asked me to replace the Idle Air Bypass valve (I think its the same thing as the IAC Valve). Replaced that and then it wouldnt run at all. Checked spark - Good. Checked compression - Good. No fuel coming up from the schrader valve on the fuel rail. bypassed the relay, and it fired right up. Replaced the relay and it ran ok for a few minuets. Then it just died. Now It wont idle. If you play with the throttle, it will run, but as soon as you try to let it idle it dies. I checked the pressure at the fuel rail, and with the engine off, we have 35psi (the minimum) and with the engine running, we have 30psi (again, the minimum). That seems to make me think its NOT the fuel pump....

What the HECK am I missing? His manuals for the van dont realy cover this van (its kinda a "tweener" - Meant to have a carb, but had FI put in it for emmisions reasons... I guess ford was in the process of working on the next gen).

TIA

Billy

I think you now have 2 problems
IAC is bad, not plugged in, gasket or o-ring slipped?
back to the original problem when you get this fixed
orig. problem may be coil
did you put a good coat of grease on the ICM?

this site will give you all the test for the sensors and what they do

The IAC (Bypass) valve is BRAND NEW, and was installed with a gasket. The first time the valve was installed, it leaked, so I put a light coat of RTV on the gasket (worked the RTV into the gasket, so none would foul the manifold or throttlebody). It is plugged in. I can pull it and test it if need be, but like I said, its brand new.

We do have another Coil, as Larry's other budy thinks that was the origional problem (like I said, Larry just asked me to put the parts on for him, not troubleshoot).

I'll put the new coil on tommorow, and will check the mating surfaces of the new valve against the old valve and make sure its corect (Dont know why I didnt do that today)
