how important is it to properly torque main bearing caps? i do not have a torque wrench. it says 95 to 105 lbs. that is very tight. to me i would think that would be as tight as you can get by hand.(with motor still in truck.
Here's something that you can try:
i) measure the length (in feet) of your breaker bar.
ii) take 95 ft-lbs of torque and divide by the length of the breaker bar and this cancels the feet.
What you have left is a force (in lbs) that you have to apply to the end of the breaker bar to achieve 95 ft-lbs. If for example your bar is 1 foot long, you would have to apply a force of 95 lbs to the end of the breaker bar. You can simply attach a fish scale to the end of the breaker bar and tighten the bolt until the fish scale reads 95 lbs (on a 1 foot bar). The longer the bar the less force will have to be put on its end to achieve the 95 ft-lbs.
I just did my mains and rod bearings earlier this week And had a 2 foot torque wrench and it took all I had to get 95 ftlb.(under the truck) Did it on a 351M. Bearings were all shot.
Please do yourself an favor and anyone else that works on that engine later, borrow, rent or buy a torque wrench! I never re-use engine fasteners (unless I installed them), for the very reason you describe. Engine bearing torque is critical, no compromise here! Anywhere else snug is okay and a little to tight is probably OKAY, BUT Not on the crank.
