I think its less than that, more like 500 lbs. I try to get them weighed soon

I'm going to have to disagree, I'm on my second truck with a Torqshift Trans (A chipped 6.0 Powerstroke & current v10) and I just traded in a 2006 Duramax with the 6-speed Allison. The Allison is Superior, but the Torqshift is right there. Both are great transmissions and are at the top of their market segment. I was amazed at how well the torqshift did even with a 450 hp turbo-diesel in front of it.

I had a 2001 Chevy with the 8.1L engine with 4.10 rear. Ran my friend who had a V-10. I passed him like he threw an anchor out of his truck. 8.1 is a beast but his V-10 was the 2V engine.

yeah looks like the first poster to match up the Chevy 8.1 V-8 to The Ford V-10, gave specs for the 5.4 Liter Ford V-8 instead, but that is still pretty impressive considering the Chevy has 2.7 liters on the triton V-8.

AGREED Had an 01 at work, drove it quite often and that thing hauled ****! Stronger by far than any V-10 I have ever ridden in! It was a 2500 long bed ex cab with 4.10's. Whew it accelerated fast!! It got 11 mpg if you feathered it or ran the crap out of it......... Much stonger than the V-10's, but expected since those 8 cylinders must have been large in comparison to the small pistons in the V-10! Stroke has a lot to do with it too! Don't know why GM canned it for the POS 6.0 gasser, talk about gutless!!

I disagree about the Chevy 8.1L taking out a 3V 6.8L V10. The one I went against was an 05 and we were about head to head. My truck is a 2006 4:30 Supercab 4X4.

That would be expected with the gearing advantage you had, put 4.30's behind an 8.1 and that would be a fair comparison! 4.30 would make an 8.1 go through those gears even faster....4.30 would be nice mated to an 8.1...

if your gonna talk about fair comaprison through gearing then you have to account for weight also so you would need to add a 1000lbs to the chevy this is if were still comparing the 8.1 to the v10 motor and trans

He had smaller diameter tires than my 275/75/18's...maybe that helped him keep up at least

Update ...

I recently pulled my 10K trailer to Houston and back to DFW and got 12.5 mpg running about 65. The odometer just turned over 30K miles. The empty, combined mileage hasn't changed, though.

The internet rumor about these motors getting better with age appears to be true.

Hopefully it will keep getting better. With diesel costing what it does (Gas too) it can really put a hurtin on a guy.

The warmer weather should help mpg also.

There is minimal difference between 4:10s and 4:30s. For some reason chevy puts tiny tires on their trucks compared to Ford some the final drive ratio more than likely still favored the chevy.

I'm running 265/75/16 on my Chevy with the 4:10 L/S and it will bbq the rear tires with the 8.1 engine. My 06 F-350 has the 5.4 and it's not even close to the Chevy. My friend with the 2V V-10 is a 4x2 as opposed to my 4x4. He's still scratching his with disbelief how my Chevy stomped him.

To bad for your friend - generally the 8.1L 4X4 Chevy and the 3V V10 is a wash. He must have a first generation 2V V10 with 3:73's or somethin' or he doesn't have a clue how to race....

I could BBQ the tires on my V10 too. Hell you can do bbq the tires on a little ricer too.

The 8.1l has long been discontinued in the 2500 and 3500.
