Way back when, Truck Trend (you know, the magazine that is only good if it agrees with you) did a 3 way comparo pitting the 2V V10 vs the GM 8.1 vs the Dodge V10.
All from memory (since the magazine I saved may have shredded itself for all the times I quoted it) had the Ford doing real well in nearly every empty test; winning most.
The 8.1 back then ('01)actually had more power .....it steadily lost a few HP toward the end of its existence in light trucks.
The 8.1 won nearly every loaded test by a second or two.....it also had the Allison 5 speed vs the Ford's hit or miss 4r100 (miss for me)
The Dodge lost most of the timed events basically running out of breath very early (kinda like a late 460, IMO)
The MPG was only about 1MPG difference favoring the lower powered Ford.
After driving everything, I bought the Ford........I did like the 8.1 but it was brand new back then and the F-250 was easily $5,000 cheaper because of deals and rebates.
Comparing the 3V V10 against the last 8.1 would have me guessing the MPG to be very close since I've read here the 3V V10 gets a RCH less MPG than the 2V....and I'd also guess the tables would have turned with the 3V now having a SLIGHT advantage under load......BUT, the 5 speed Torqueshift vs the 6 speed allison probably makes performance VERY close.....after all, the current 6.0 GM is more than a match for the V10 when empty!!!

Odd considering the GM has signficantly less power. Under 400 ft of torque, like 380? The weight of the truck may play a role in 0-60 times. Why would the Ford be heavier though, heavier duty components, frame, driveline etc? Running empty means nothing to a truck. I suspect you know that already.

Depends on how one uses their truck.........For me, I tow well less than 10% of the time.
I like the V10, still own one; but like when I chose the V10 over the "slightly" stronger 8.1...or when many here choose the V10 over the "slightly better when towing" PSD; we all have our priorities.
Heres an interesting test if you haven't already seen it:
I drove an 01 2500HD 8.1/Allison/2WD/4.10 before my 07 PSD/4WD. Both were/are absolutely bone stock.
The HD got the same mileage towing my 10K enclosed car hauler as my PSD gets ... about 10mpg. The HD got about 13 combined driving, unloaded while the PSD gets about 16.
Off the line, the HD would smoke my PSD. But the PSD will maintain speed much better.
My 8.1 burned about 1/2 quart of oil over a 3000 mile period. In the 120K miles I owned it, the only issue I had was a crank position sensor.
The V10 has a tad less torque at low rpm compared to the 8.1l mainly because the 8.1l is 496ci and the 6.8l is 415ci. The 8.1l won't rev and redlines around 4000-4500 rpm. The 6.8l will rev to 6000rpm easily. For the 6.8l steeper gears like 4:30s is best.
The 6.8l V10 will get much better mpgs than the 8.1l.
If you want accurate info on the 6.8l V10 I suggest you go down to the V10 forum.
I'm not so sure on the milage difference if your talking about the new V10. My 08 is getting between 10.5-12.5 on the highway. About the same as my brothers 8.1. Buddy with a 8.1 gets about 10 but he always drives like he's qualifying for Indy.

The 2v 6.8l gets better mpg on the highway than the 3V. Once your 3V get broken in it will get better mpg. The best my 2V got so far was 15mpg on back roads averaging about 45-50mph. I don't get long highway trips often. I've noticed though once the V10/SD get 50k on it, it loosens up and seems cruise better.
A while back in the V10 forum there was a guy who had the 6.8l and the 8.1l he said when pulling he got 2-3mpg better than the 8.1l. Maybe that was just him.

Your saying pulling the same trailer the 8.1l gasser and the PSD got 10mpg. Sorry your towing mpg #s don't sound right at all.
