I'am in the process of swaping out the starter, and just wondering if there is anything else I need to know besides the three bolts??? and disconnecting the power supply??? If anyone would like to share any other information I would be most grateful.
yes. Im 90% sure I took it by a Ford Dealership and they stated sounds like a starter issue, but they want to take a closer look... Batteries are new cables are good, Basically, when I start my truck it cranks and turns over great but makes a terrible metal to metal sound. hope this gives u more info
I just replaced mine a few weeks ago while on a road trip. Mine is a 2002 and has the Motorcraft starter (two bolt layout). Other '02's have the 3-bolt setup (I think a Mitsubishi (sp?) starter. The two bolt one is shorter in length also.
I initially thought I had corroded terminals, but finally noticed the starter not engaging the flywheel, but just spinning within the starter - a dead give-a-way that it was a bad starter. Replaced it and have not looked back.
Just check your connections and batteries. My experience has been that the PRIMARY battery will be the suspect batter if it is a battery issue.

Good luck,
I never knew there were 2 different starters for a 7.3 ?? I have never seen more than one style offered and they all had 3 bolts.

Thank you for your time
Just replaced mine a few months ago. I believe it's the bolt on the very top that is the longest (and hardest) to get out. When you remove the starter be careful not to yank on it, you have another teeny tiny (8mm I think) bolt to remove and another wire. After that is just the same procedure in reverse to get the new one back on. If you haven't yet purchased a new starter (or if you are purchasing and taking in your core at the same time) you can have the parts place test your old starter.
Dave, another bit of info...............the Motorcraft (2-bolt) was cheaper that the Mitsubishi (3-bolt). Also, the Motorcraft unit for the 2002 had a 12-tooth gear that engages the flywheel. I think there are other number of teeth patterns as well.

From MY experience:
1. A clicking noise (if you have strong lights with the ignition switch on) can indicate
problems with batteries, battery terminal posts (corrosion, etc.) or the battery
cables themselves.
2. When No. 1 has been resolved and you still have the "clicking" noise, then take a
small hammer and reach up under there and tap on the starter housing. Then
attempt cranking again. If that works, then it is most likely the solenoid or a
combination of the solenoid and the starter contacts.
If you have ever had a starter apart, you will see somewhat heavy duty contacts that transfer the juice from the batteries to the starter motor via the solenoid. These contacts wear down and sometimes do not transfer enough juice.
yeah im thinking bad solinoid batts are brand new and cables look good.no corrosion either. isnt the solinoid part of the starter on our trucks?cuz a new starter is like 200 bucks.
Redfordguy,
Because of my emergency replacement, I had to go with a NEW NAPA lifetime warranty starter by Motorcraft (2-bolt) (made in China) for $210 + tax - no core charge; NAPA didn't even want the old starter. I called DB Electrical and their price was much less, but I did not have the time to have them ship me one. It is worth the phone call to DB to check their prices and availability. Suggest nothing but a NEW starter though. Do make sure you know your bolt pattern and if possible, the number of teeth on the starter engaging gear.
