I need to replace my extension housing seal. To do this I have to remove the driveshaft. Has anyone done this before? What is the procedure for removing the driveshaft?
Also while I am down there I am going to drop the pan and put in a new filter, should I just ford transmission oil or are there some better choices out there.
The first thing to do before removing the driveshaft is mark the driveshaft yoke and the flange on the axle pinion. This will allow you to put it back in the exact same position it came out, which is important since it is balanced and putting it back in wrong will cause you a lot of vibration issues.
If the driveshaft is a one piece unit, all you have to do is remove the U-Joint nuts and bolts at the axle and pull it off the transmission or transfercase splines.
If it is a two piece unit, you must remove the driveshaft from the axle in the same manner as above, then pull it off the coupling shaft splines, remove the center bearing, and side the coupling shaft from the transmission splines.
Removing a driveshaft is pretty easy, just remember to mark it to retain proper balance, and if you are not replacing the U-Joints, tape the bearing cups on so they do not fall off.
As for the tranny oil, the Ford stuff would be good, and there is a lot of other good oils out there as well. Personally, I use Quaker State engine oil and Valvoline oils for everything else. Good Luck!
