I was just throwing out a caution. Myself, and a couple other guys tried 466 swaps in the past, and have to bail out on it. The Dana70 may last you quite a while, but one slight wrong move, and it'll break something. The rockwells in md trucks would be a safe bet, and can get decent gears and a Detroit locker for them.
Mine was money issues, and an unsupportive spouse. The other guy got in over his head, and changed courses in life. There was another, and I think it was money issues too.
Max reliable hp of a 360? It can be reliable at 1000hp, but driveability is going to be the issue when you get past the 400 mark, just like a Cummins 6BT. Sure you can drive with 800hp on the street, but it's pretty tricky getting the pedal sensitivity dealt with.
I was seriously going to jump on this.
My 2002 7.3 was running great, i had some cash, a garage, a tool or two...
Then i ended up in a new line of work that had requirements on the age of the vehicle i was driving, so i traded the 02 for my 08.
I have still been thinking about this lately, and I'm thinking that If/ when i do it, I'll be using a newer engine with common rail injection. Not only do they sound more civilized, but they run real nice from what i hear. Also parts are supposed to be reasonable.
Bigger fuel pump, bigger injectors, turbo setup.
As far as tuning the engine, I noticed that there were a few off road chips to disable the after-treatment system, so I'd start with that and then use some microcontrollers and amplifiers to play with the PWM signals to the injectors.
These microcontrollers are cheap now, and it would be easy to listen to the PWM signal from the computer, and send a new PWM signal to the injector, modifying it if needed.
I would keep it simple. the little chips would just extend the PWM signal after a certain extent, so that low fueling would be stock, and as fuel demand increased, the signal would just get boosted over stock. That takes care of the fueling,
As for timing, I'd probably decide afterwards the exact method, but there seem to be a few.
Just modifying the PWM signals would get the coal rolling out of the big injectors.
Dont forget to add more rpm. The newer high hp 466's only rev to 2600. For sure, limiting its potential. The new 466's are still HEUI, actually a gen2 HEUI, like a 6 litre(vt365).

I really thought they went to common rail piezo injectors...
I'm becoming scared of using an engine older than i am. lol.
just seems like parts for newer models would be easier to find....
Tweaking the heui system would probably cost more than the piezo injector common rail system.
i hear alot of "hot rod" parts are available for the older 466's. and full rebuild kits are a little over $1000. i know a guy that can get ahold of used P series pumps from a tractor puller after a season or two goes by. i'm definately looking into that. i'd like to have a single turbo setup. i want all around reliability. good street manners, towing and sled pulling. not looking for an 1500HP trailer queen that only runs 30 seconds at a time. i'll keep you guys posted, although i may not start the swap for a year or 2 i'm going to look for and gather parts along the way!
Although I will be trying for around 800+hp. I figure I will stuff the DT466 in an engine bay that it can fit with a small 4" lift on the front suspension. I know that means alot of other work but I will be trying to keep my truck as low as possible while having the engine still in the engine bay.
Just wondering what you thought but between all the truck manufacturers through out say 66 and on to 90 which trucks have the biggest engine bay to start with?
I was going to go with a F250 77 era but also thought about the C20's and some of the IH trucks. I always liked the 66 IH truck but was always wondering about other trucks.
My old idea of the 56 F600 went out the window. That would have been a lot of custom work that I haven't a clue about. So hopefully maybe just a 77 F250 with a custom dask and intercooler in the bed would be enough for the engine length wise and a small lift for the depth.
I dont know what happened to the other videos of that truck, it was truly something to behold. Couldnt imagine seeing it in person. Tires looked to me like roughly a 33x10.5, last I saw the other video. MAN...I miss hearing that lopey idle already. Turns out there was a whole crooked money issue with that rig. Too bad, it was the best thing I've ever seen on youtube, besides the Rudeo de Camiones trucks that pull the front tires off the ground.
That's an awesome video, I was watching it the other day. There was a similair video of a black superduty in the daylight from trackside but I can't find it. I just hope to effortlessly drag the sled through the gate.
