Spewing oil

Ok. I will attempt to keep this short. Truck spewing oil. I am at work and cannot see where it is coming from so I drop it at a local shop I have used before for other vehicles. They tell me it is a solenoid on the EBPV. They are not willing to do the work because they say it takes specialty tools and it needs to have specific backlash set. Does that sound right? Is this something I can do at home after I get the correct part?

Wait a minute...

These trucks have stuff on 'em that require specialty tools!

But really, is the valley of the engine filled with oil? Or, is it running from behind the turbo, sotospeak?

I am only going on the shop diagnosis at this point. They said from the solenoid. It was a little dark yet when I looked this morning. I did not get a good look at the valley but it did not look full of oil.

Yes, on the turbo pedistal there is a selenoid and an actuator piston that can leak. Two options here: 1)Ford sells a rebuild kit for the EBPV actuator. While you are in there, replace turbo pedistal o-rings, top and bottom. Sometimes it is hard to tell if it is the pedestal orings or the selenoid leaking. They are both in the same area and a pain to diagnose.

2) you can replace the EBPV pedistal for an EBPV delete pedistal. You will not have the funky jet engine noise on cold starts. And it will not kick in while you are driving. Just another route you can take.

Jay re read my post I edited. And someone may chime in on a good place to order parts from. I am thinking give some of the supporters a call, like powerstrokeshop.com. They may have the pedistal o-ring kit and EBPV pedistal rebuild kit ready for ship.

Is the delete kit a good way to go in MN? It has been below zero alot here this winter and it does help to warm up the engine when the ebpv closes. It does not ever do that to me when driving. I will contact powerstrokeshop and see what they have. Thanks!

If you are thinking about going down the #2 path, here is what you need from Ron. He may be able to ship fast: Click on link---> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-5-...spagenameZWDVW. Ron is a good guy and a recommended vendor around here. He has a contact number on the page.

Honestly, it comes down to how much you want the truck to be stock. Some f450's and F-550's did not come with the EBPV. It was added to please the EPA and that is pretty much it. In my opinion the only way to get these diesels warmed up is to run them. Period. Idleing for anymore than 5 minutes is just wasteing fuel becuase there is only a certain amount of heat that these diesels will produce with such little fuel going into the cylinders at idle. I personally do not have the EBPV on my truck any longer and I do not notice longer warm ups.

Great. Thank you much. Gave rep points. I will speak to both places and decide from there which route to pursue.

Glad you got it figured out. Post back when you get everything installed. At the very least you will not have any more leaks in that general area for a long time to come, If you are doing this yourself, you can go here www.7point3.com and get the turbo removal instructions, or do a search for wicked wheel installation and that will guide you in the removal of the turbo.
