Oil consumption

The 6.9, 1987 engine has about 150K miles on it, has lots of power, but I loose about a quart of oil every couple of hundread miles. The truck doesn't seem to smoke.

Could it be the valve stem seals which need replacing? If so, has anybody any experience doing this, and what was the result? Any tips how best to do this procedure?

This is a post by a Ford/Navistar tech rep.

Oil consumption, and the proper checking of the oil levels in Ford diesels comes up periodically. Ford dipsticks are calibrated for hot oil. The 10 quarts in the IDI engines expand about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart as the oil heats up, and contracts the same amout after cooling. If you check the oil first thing in the morning ( which I grew up doing ) the engines will all indicate oils level below full, but when checked hot, will ( after a 10 minute drain time ) the oil level is usually at full. If you are checking the oil cold, and keeping the level at full, you are actually over filling the engine which will burn of the extra rapidly.

Suggestion: Check oil hot after 10 minute drain time.
Don't add until level reaches add line ( 2 quarts ).

In my days at Ford this often cured, or at least improved, the apparent oil consumption complaints.

fuzzy 1626 - No no oil leaking from the engine. What does CDR stand for?

DieselDon - I'm aware of the oil expansion, especially on the ATF. The motor oil will drop in level when driving, until it barely touches the dip stick, if the level is not watched and oil added.

The CDR valve works something like a PCV on a gasser. If the CDR is clogged and won't close a higher rpm's it can let way to much oil vapor into the intake. On your engine I think it is located behind the air cleaner. About the size of a tuna can. Should be cleaned by soaking in gas and then shook to remove the gas. Let air dry. Do not blow dry with pressurized air. Can be checked by blowing into tiny hole in valve and listen for click of diaphragm closing. Can't remember what CDR stands for right now.

Crankcase Depression Regulator

The 6.9 motors by design loose a bit of oil by the valve stems.

The 7.3 valve stem seals were redesigned, but they worked so well the valve stems did not get enough oil which cause them to stick.

I think your oil consumption will be reduced after you get the CDR cleaned out.
If it has not been serviced regularly, it will have to soak and be agitated periodically for several hours to cut the tarry crud loose.

CDR should be serviced at least every other oil change.

Thank you Dave for the detailed reply. I will try the CDR cleaning approach first and measure the oil consumption before changing out the already bought valve stem seals. The valve stem seals I bought are for the 7.3 engine, but I was told they fit the 6.9.

Dave Sponaugle -

Just back from taking the CDR off for cleaning. A lot of oily dirt and an old rag there. Unit is soaking in gas. Have a question. I found a black, 1/4 inch thick hard plastic washer there. Don't know the purpose of it, since the male connector of the vertical pipe attached to the CDR does not fit into it. Is there a special fitting to the engine block? I would assume that there should be an air tight connection?! May be my oil consumption problem is getting solved.............

A rag in the CDR?

The plastic washer was also in the CDR?

Sounds like you have stuff that is not supposed to be there.

There should be a gasket between the CDR and the intake manifold opening, rubber not plastic.

I just replaced my CDR. The old gasket/O ring/rubber washer/or whatever you want to call it on the old one was hard and felt like plastic. It goes between the CDR and intake on the piece that fits in the hole on the intake. I'm sure that will help with your oil consumption and you may have some more power. I could tell on mine.

Thanks Dave and RP27G8G for your response. That rubber/plastic dingy has shrunk so much lying next to the opening, that it didn't fit the pipe end. In the absence of it, I used silicone to close any gap between the pipe and the hole. Added 2 quarts of oil, which I lost in the last 375 miles driving and will monitor oil level.

I just replaced my CDR valve, and my rubber washer was hard like plastic, and it was a bit melted. I was able to get a new one from ford for $4.

Thanks Kevbits. I'm presently in Baja and in the absence of this seal, I used silicone. Thanks for the info., I'll get the seal next month when I'm in the States. I am interested if you did have high oil consumption before you serviced the CDR valve? How much oil did you use?
