hey guys,
i have a 1988 f150 with manual locking hubs and i was just curious whether or not automatic hubs are a: available for that year, b: interchangeable from a later model, or c: available aftermarket. thanks
Most 88's had what I call the throw away hubs. That is the ones that has a flange and slips on over the lugs.
My question is why would you want to swap to auto hubs? Usually we here questions of people that have auto hubs wanting to switch to manual. I know that a lot of people want the convience of shift on the fly. Auto hubs have been known to fail when you need them the most. Also a lot of times auto hubs will not engage if there is no forward movement. In my opinion manuals are better.
And to answer your question Yes you can swap them from a later year. You will need parts from the roter out.
Not wanting to seem harsh, but like the others have said, why in blazes would you want to replace manual hubs with automatic hubs? That's like replacing a Mercedes with a Yugo.....
it was mainly a hypothetical, but the curiosity came from the convenience of not having to get out of the truck in a -5* snow bullet storm haha, thanks for your input guys... besides, by the looks of it im getting one ton straight axles to swap in so redoing the ifs d44s would be a waste of time
The convenience of auto hubs certainly is nice. However, it only takes 2 seconds of forethought to lock 'em in before you leave. I went from auto hubs to some warn manual hubs on my Explorer and absolutely love 'em. If I think that I will need four wheel drive, I just lock them in before I go. I don't have to worry or cross my fingers that the hubs are going to work when I need them. Also, the warn hubs are darn near bulletproof.
