I'm looking at buying a 1994 Ranger. It's from some little no name used car dealer. He tells me that is has roughly 138,000 miles on it but the odometer only has 5 places so it shows 38,000. Is there any way that I can be sure as to how many times it's rolled over. I mean given the year you would expect it to only be that much but some people drive more than others. My dad works for Ford so I had him run the VIN but he wasn't able to find too much in the records. Would the true mileage show up in a CARFAX? The dealer said that he would give me a copy of the CARFAX but I haven't actually seen it yet.
Hey, I've owned a lot of trucks in my time, most of them fords and I have to say that this is the best truck I have ever owned. Close second is a 90 F150 six cyl. long bed plain jane, which was a darn good one.
GO FOR IT Sounds like he's bein honest with you. Just my .02
Thanks. Ya I'm all about Ford, especially considering my dad works for them. I had a 98 Explorer Sport and I loved it. Got in an accident and then was forced to get Saturn out of necessity (didn't have time to look for anything cuz I needed one the next day). But ya, I'm really psyched about this truck. It seems to be good I just like to try and cover my bases.
The Carfax report may tell you how many miles are on it. It all depends on what is reported to Carfax. It may have an inspection at 67,000 miles then you would have a good idea it is the actual mileage. Or it may say how many previous owners there were but mention no mileage. A '94 with only 138k miles sounds like a good deal, and the dealer is willing to give you the Carfax report. Sounds ok to me.

???
My '94 says 178,xxx on its odometer. Unless the Ranger was that much different then my Mazda it should show six digits, not five. I, too, suggest carfax.
My 1994 Ranger has all six digits (107,000). I've had it since new.
Now that raises an interesting question. Why the different odometer on this particular truck? To me, red flags are going up, and the value of the truck isn't.
I would be curious as to what the title says... builders title, maybe???
Something ain't kosher.

You might want to check the dealer with the Better Business Bureau -- they often don't have any reports, but they should get complaints on the real crooks.
Also, consider the general condition of the truck. If the truck seems tight, and the engine/tranny appear in good condition, then you're probably OK. Most trucks start to show their age around 200K -- not all. But the overall condition is at least as important as the miles on the clock
Just some free advice --- worth every cent that you're paying for it!
I know in the 94 there were two different dash clusters. One had the tach and one didn't. For those of you who responded 5 or 6, please state which cluster you have (wondering if that is the difference due to spacing).
