My fire company has an '01 Ex with a 7.3. Recently, it seems to have developed a bit of a battery drain, which is trying to kill the batteries if it sits longer then two days. We did a little work looking for the "leak" and we have narrowed it down to something that is connected to the 50A Maxi-Fuse #105 under the hood. This is labeled "Feed to Junction Block". What the he!! is the junction block, and where is it in the truck? I have a feeling that the knuckleheads from the radio shop hooked something to it that is starting to malfunction, but I don't know where to start looking.
Is it just the feed to the fuse panel under the little panel by the driver's knees? That seems overly simple, but I know it gets its power from the main fuse box, and that would make a lot of sense to have one of those circuits somehow leaking power...
That fuse is the main feed to your fusebox under the dash
You have a lot of work to go before that puppy is narrowed down!
Disconnect the fuses in the fusebox under the dash for auxillary items one at a time and see which one causes a drain. Start with your suspected radio. If it is one of the fire radios, don't forget to call dispatch and let them know before you do it!! You don't want the cops out wondering who stole a radio!
Thanks for the quick response guys. Bion, I think that the problem is one of the fire radios, and just the very feature you are describing, has gone haywire. The radio seems to be turning itself on at odd times. Pulling one fuse at a time is what we did under the hood to narrow the problem down - we just need to take it to the next step
I work with spinge at the firehouse on this problam. I have had the radio shop install a new radio. The conclusion on that is this, the radio will turn itself on and off if it senses a fluctuation in the current. System tested at a 3 amp draw in the on position and a 4.5 amp draw when transmitting. It still has a 2.5 amp draw when completely disconnected. I just read another artical on here about the GEM shorting out due to a water leak in the windscreen. There is no leak and all systems work fine otherwise. I have also read about these trucks acting goofy when the battery amperage drops below 8 volts such as blower motors turning on and off and other electrical issues. Point being, even thow there is not a water leak is it still posable for the GEM to be shorting out causing this drain.......... Dave
