im in the process of re-building a 390. is there any difference between a 352-390 heads. are there any performance draw backs from using a head from a 360, for a 390 motor. the engine is bored .060, crank will be .020 under. getting complete master engine kit with a comp. cam new pistons re-manufactured connection rods.
the engine i got was only bottom end. no top end parts. so i know i need to get all new head bolts and stuff. thinking of using head studs instead of bolts.
right now i cant afford to get get edelbrock heads. too expensive. i can probably get the heads from my local pnp yard, just waiting for their weekend sale (50% off), if they have one coming up i hope. what casting numbers should i look for??
The 352 heads will physically fit. But there can be differences in port sizes. 360 and 390 heads pretty much interchange. 428 heads are 390 heads. 428CJ heads will fit and have much bigger ports and valves. All FE heads will bolt on, the 427 heads will usually have valve interference problems.
Be careful with PYP.. got a set there myself D2TEAA's and they were cracked.. they would only swap for another set which they didnt have and then it was my problem to find another PYP yard that did have a set (that wasnt cracked) to replace them.. pretty ****ty business tactics IMO they should offer magging on the spot for a nominal fee if thats their approach.
Last few times out I seen everything from C8AE-H, C1AE, C4AE, C6TEG, so they are there just have a real close look. By the time you get them rebuilt there will be 400.00 in them for sure
ty for the info. the pnp yard by me has a few 67-72 trucks there. i believe a few of them has small blocks in them. if the 70 f-250 is still there, i can probably get those heads, if they are still there. got my disc brake conversion from this truck for my along with all the power steering parts as well.
i already figured with pnp heads they will be re-conditioned at a machine shop. im a little bit **** about using new items especially for my tastes.
and ty for the others that chimed in for info as well.
You can buy a set of prepped heads from your favorite local parts store for about the same price of buying and restoring a set of yard heads.
Just my $.02's --Mike
