which heads?????

I'm very slowly re-building my 390 again. im just curious which heads would be best?

its a 390 bored .060, re-ground crank. comp cam .533 lift.

i presently have no set of heads, so i guess i could any set of heads i want??

could i use a set of 428 cj heads. or stick with 352-390 heads?

are there a set of 390gt heads, or is this a myth?

since i have no head bolts, could i use studs instead. or would that be a waste of money?

How much do you want to spend? What intake will you be running? You can buy a set or remanned heads for about the same price of having a shop go through a set plus the cost of the old heads. If you want to lighten up the motor, then of course aluminum heads can be had, but again, for a few more $$$.

im planning on using wieand intake with a holley 750cfm. priced new heads from edelbrock for about $1200.00 for each head. im not worried about saving weight too much. im currently running stock 360/390 heads on my current engine, either i have bad rings or a botched head job on the current heads. since this is my only daily driver that is why im building another motor.

i know a person up in stockton that has a set of 428cj heads, was thinking maybe getting those. but on e-bay ive seen a few on there for sell. seen a couple of 390gt heads on there, but not too sure at this point.

Depending on the year the "GT" heads are the same as std FE heads. GT heads used the 14 bolt exhaust pattern that's the only difference. Well maybe better stock valve springs but the core heads themselves are the same chamber and valve size. 66 was the last year for lowriser heads and the C6AE-6090-R's are nice. C4AE-6090-G also a great head to work with. CJ heads are nice with the better valves if those are not really expensive. I'd rethink the Weiand intake depending on what you get for heads..... For certain if you do get the CJ heads you'd want to look at a better intake.

The Edel RPM is also good. And the old F-427 Edel intakes worth a look if you can fine one. Blue Thunder has a very nice line of intakes. Barry R is a dealer for them @ Survival. Survival Motorsports Home Page

Both AMK and ARP sell bolt kits. ARP a stud kit as well. Restoration hardware - AMK Products Inc !

ive been thinking of using studs instead of bolts. but then again i do need to get all new bolts for this engine. the engine was given to me (free). it only was a short block. no heads/top end. i do have the timing cover and oil pan. orginally was looking for a 390 crank, but dude i got it from had no use for the block so he gave that to me as well.

hell cant go wrong with free parts.

Sounds like you are building for mild HP. You can use "stock" heads with some nice springs, an Edel RPM intake and I would go no more than 700 on the carb.
Just my thoughts... --Mike
