Bringing this back up, had a Proform HEI in my F250. Driving down the highway about 20 miles from home the engine fluttered and died. No fire. Called a buddy and he pulled me home.
Pulled the distributor, shaft was unusually tight, removed the shaft, top bushing was cooked, the magnetic pickup was a copper birds-nest.
A spirial is cut into the shaft to push oil to the top bushing, but a Chevy turns CW, a Ford runs CCW. Spirial was in the wrong direction for a Ford.
Replaced the pickup, cleaned the burned grease and copper out, greased everything up good, running like new!
I read some old units have crappy gears, also I now know why colo was getting worse mpgs, the vacuum advance in this unit is reallyyyy stifffff, advance is coming really reatrded with this units, im using a pro one with a special bord, besides the retarded advance its awsome..
