Hey guys, I got the GPCM installed yesterday morning. Wow, there were lots of updates, the old one had a module that was the entire size of the bottom of the module, the new was was about a third that size. I got it installed very quickly, cycled the key, the light stayed on for a good 10 seconds. mind you the batteries are weak from sitting this entire time i've been posting, and trying to crank it here and there, running the glow plugs, etc... also it has been sitting for about a week with no cranking, so if there was a fuel leak, it should be very hard to start.
this thing cranked about as slow as a diesel can crank and still build compression, and fired off right away!! I was so excited! It sounded soooo good.
Thank you guys for all your help to figure this one out. It would have been a much more painful process for me to learn this thing without you!
I've been thinking that $1000 is high too that's why I've been holding off and trying to track down ANYTHING else that might be contributing to the problem. I have had quotes of no less than $500 for the IP itself and am told that the 'book' calls for 5-8 hrs. for installation. I am not a stupid man and would love to know if it is something I could do myself but I am not willing to sacrifice my truck for my ego OR $500
the rebuild price is the same as new!! At one place, they charge 4-something for the rebuild and I'd have to remove it and bring it to them! Anyway, more opinions on what the price should be and how involved the install is would be appreciated. Today will be the first full day of driving with the diesel kleen. I'm not super optimistic since, as I said, I use Lucas on a regular basis and it is designed along the same lines as dk. We'll see.
You don't happen to turn on ur key and see the wait to start breifly flash or stay on for under 5 secs then start hear the clicking? If so you most likely do have a couple bad glow plugs and the clicking is it's "afterglow phase" which is supposed to help cut down on smoke when first started and aid in keeping it running after startup when it's really cold. In a perfect world the darn thing is supposed to be started by then....lol
yes i did turn the key on and check the problem.
but on this one thet i have it was 3 out of 8 injectors that were bad and the o rings on the injectors than went with a K N air filter now starts good if warm or pluged in there is no problems. also dose anyone here have the 94 IDI TURBO? if so can you ever hear your turbo wine??? because i cant and had a lot of truble with pulling a heavy load but anm not sure if i should worrie about the dang turbo now.thanks to all for all the help on the starting issue and tanks in advance for the turbo info...
also dont take the turbo off to change the glow plugs is LOTS LESS WORK to go at the plugs under it.
You wont realy hear the turbo wine if you have your window down goose it then let off and listen real close you may hear it despool. I can hear mine a little now that I have a straid pipe and can really hear it while driving along a wall. These turbos are fairly quiet compared to say a powerstroke. Also might think about a boost gauge that'll let you know what your turbos doing.
didnt weigh it but the chev that started the pull couldnt pull it anymore.thsts how i set up to hook up.take everything in a 4 bedroom house and put it on a trailer and there u have it
