While driving in sub zero temperatures in my 04' I noticed a cold air draft coming ou the bottom of the steering wheel. It seems to exit right below the bottom of the face of the steering wheel. Has anybody else expericed this problem and if so did you fix it or live with it. My only idea is the stuff a small peice of insulation behind the face plate. The fraft is bad enough it makes my hands, legs and "other" things cold!
And my other question is how do you get the face plate of the steering wheel off. I am talking about the horn/airbag plate with the ford symbol on it. ( I have no idea what else to call it) Thanks guys!
On my '05 xlt I have felt that draft as well just have not got around to identifying and blocking it off. Actually I think the whole vent system is marginal on these trucks. When changing positions like floor, vent or def it does not completely change over positions and when I press the recirc buttion I feel colder air come into the cabin almost like the button works in reverse. Anyway I like the truck a lot , this is just an annoyance.
I don't have this issue on mine. I would check the steering column boots on the engine side and dash side and see if the pass through is open. Maybe the boot is not sealing properly and allowing the cold air to get in. However, if this was the case, I think you would also here alot of engine noise. I have an automatic climate control, I just don't like the fact that there's not much air getting to the rear seats.
Not necessarily the steering wheel, but now that you mention it, the wife did mention a decent blast of cold air coming from under the dash the last time the temps hit single digits. (and I felt it, too) Definitely need to prowl around on the firewall and see if there are any openings next time the weather warms up.
Check the rubber boots on the firewall. If it has a clutch there is also one where that goes through the firewall. Mine was popped out of place and let noise and air come through. It's right under the steering wheel on the firewall. There are other boots there too.

Thanks for the insight guys. I was out today (it was actually nice outside today), and checked the firewall and steering column and found nothing. I guess it must just be a draft. My plan is to strategically place some insulation in the crack that the draft is coming from on the steering wheel. Thanks for the help!
In single digit or lower temps, the air inside of your truck will warm up form the heat running, but steel components (like the seat brackets) are still freezing cold. It will feel like a draft coming from under the seats. I suspect the same thing about the shaft and aluminum brackets under the airbag.
As for the dash, it has a large volume of trapped cold air in it. Warm the remaining volume inside the truck with the heat, and it will then feel like a cold draft is leaking out of the dash at any opening.
Never noticed it until I read this, but my truck does this also. It quit once the cab warmed up... it wasn't that cold this morning (40F) but I did notice a draft from under the airbag/horn.
