No help @ dieselstoop

I posted this last week on the stop, with poor response. Can you help?

Good day folks, I spend most of my time 1 floor down on the 7.3 IDI forum. However I find myself driving a 97 F350 service truck for work. Now here's what I know, it is a huge pig on fuel ( like 5-6 mpg), it also shakes (sort of) when it is cold, the exhaust smells heavily of diesel , & it seems to require alot of pedal (throttle) movement before the engine responds. I compare this truck to my 94 IDIT which pulls 19mpg, idles like glass, no exhaust smell & just plain "boogies" when the skinny pedal is pushed.
What can be done to help my work horse? Is there a way of checking codes or something like that to narrow down the problem? What upgrades would the " collective " recommend to help in the economy, power & smell departments?
THX much, Cheers Rick

Check the EBPV system.
Check the EOT.
Check running temp (coolant).
Smell raw fuel?

Holy poop!!!!, I didn't expect this kind of response this quickly. OK . So pardon my ignorance on some of the upcoming questions, but I have worked near exclusively with mechanically injected engines. SO that being said, How do I check the EBPV? What is an EOT ? I'll shoot the temp tomorrow morning when I get into work with an infrared gun. And yes it smells awful of raw fuel.
On the maintenance issue I'm told it has had regular changes @ 5000KM. She has 217KM (135 miles), it seems to shake the whole truck when cold, sort of like a missfire . I can't see the tailpipe well enough to say white smoke or not,( it's a stack on the passenger side) however we have been getting between some terribly cold weather lately ,so all the smoke looks white. This problem (I'm told has been long ongoing) is new to me because I've only been driving her for 2 weeks. The shaking goes away when warm. I've only unplugged the map sensor, nothing else done.
Sorry for the long post, THX MUCH, Cheers Rick

A hard miss or shaking engine could be the IPR valve. (Injection pressure regulator) Most of the time when the orings on it are bad, it will run like it has a miss. But lets start with the basics.

How long since the Fuel filter was changed?
Have you cleaned the Fuel Pressure regulator screen?
(this can be done with the fuel filter out. Leaning over the grill, there will be a small hole twards the top of the fuel filter housing on the right side, inside the bowl. Look in there with a mirror and light. You should see a nice shiney screen, if not take a q-tip stick (no cotton) and gently brush the black crud off.)
Does your glow plug system work? (Does the amp gauge on the dash stay drawn down for a few minutes after start..)
Try unplugging the Exhaust back pressure valve (EBPV) it will be a two wire plug directly under the outlet of the intake side of the turbo. Cold weather will cause this to close to help the engine warm up.
How about the air filter and intake? Clean, clear?
Exhaust pipe crimped or clogged? (That's a long shot)
Turbo health, end play on the shaft, or bent blades....

Duck hit the nail on the head IMO with the fuel filter. A 6637 airfilter will help also with the mileage and performance. If it a work truck andf you have a utility bed loaded with tools that may affect the performance. Definately clean the FPR screen. Go thru duck's list for starters and post up. We can help and tend to be better than that "other" crew. LOL

THX alot folks, for the input. I'll get started on duck's list ASAP. I did get to shoot the temp when I got in this morning & the housing where the top rad hose enters the engine was only 165 F . It seems sort of low to me, but if it the return from the rad the it may be OK. Cheers Rick

May be a temp prob as noted by Madvan.....

Could also have to do with idle & warmup times due to cold ....

OK ? ? ? Does this temp probe thing have anything to do with the problems this truck is having? and how? To clarify ,I warmed up the truck for 15 minutes before leaving the yard this morning. We live 18 miles from work, & I drove her @ 65 mph. That about 2700 rpm. From the time I stopped to unlock the gate , open the bay door, pull inside & pop the hood was a matter of 2 minutes. Now the temp gun pointed @ the housing where the top rad hose enters the engine was only 165 F.. Is this too low a temperature? THX Rick

165* is way to cold for a diesel.
Change the t-stat first.
A low eot also adds fuel.
