Plugs/wires don`t cost very much when you install them yourself, even a quick tuneup will save you gas $$$.
In the long it`ll pay by saving wasted fuel and it`ll at least have a chance of starting in -30....
Suit yourself, you can pay for afew tuneup parts, some injector cleaner or spend alot more at the pumps......
A tune up on these trucks are fairly simple, all you need is a $10 DVOM and some specs. There are only a few sensors and most are simple to test or clean: Throttle body - clean with intake cleaner Intake Air Bypass - remove and clean with intake cleaner Intake Air Temp - Normally at high kms it's just best to get a new one instead of trying to clean Intake Coolant Temp - normally doesn't cause a problem and just a simple resistance test Throttle Position Sensor - adjust till it's just under 1 volt Manifold Pressure Sensor - Can't do much other than make sure the vacuum hose has a good connection. Oxygen Sensor - Only can be tested on a portable lab scope and should be replaced every 150 000 kms. I think you only have one anyways.
Then it's pretty much a standard tune up, rotor, cap, wires, plugs and reset timing. I'd recommend a Mitivac fuel flush, it costs $100 but it is well worth it as it cleans the entire intake fuel system out. It also works on carbed vehicles too.
The trucks kind of got the short stick when it came to the EFI setup. The cars got all the improvements while they still used the same setup from 1986-94.
My wife's old mustang wouldn't start the first winter we were here in Regina, I checked fuel pressure, changed rotor and cap, and eventually when I put new plugs in it she fired right up!!
I'm not crushing it outright of course, just parts are finding new homes. The front clip (maybe) will go into the 69 with the rear ends gear swap. The tranny/transfer case/ drivelines will go into the 69. The seats are headed to the 52. Actually Preppy wants the 351W.
I will also be parting out a 1987-90 Ford F150 I didn't buy yet for this project so I will have many parts if people are interested.
First come first serve.
You let me know when you get the parts vehicle Ryan. I may not be able to come get the parts first, but I will definatly send you a cheque and pay first!
Hell Ill even give ya a cheque that isnt bouncy haha.
of course this project is still in planning/preperation but should be top priority. Be nice to have a cool winter vehichle and since the 49/52/Internationals are great and priceless summer cruisers the 1969 is expendable enough to use as a winter work truck, but of course treated right.
I really like the 69 for some reason, but why would I ever drive a 1969 around when I got a 1949, right?
I couldnt agree with you more, that 49 is sweet. Maybe you should get another one, and put the 49 body on a 4x4 frame, you could put a flathead in there, that would be a sweet winter vehicle!
