Your caking of crap around the IC boots is normal for a non CCV modded truck. It is a boost leak happening or about to happen. The leak around the bowl area may not be a leak but just dust from residue. That is why I like a clean engine so I can see if it is leaking.

Matter of fact, I had a minor EBP rod leak at the pedestal along with the pedestal orings. I eliminated it with a non EBP unit. Check out the slob that Ford considers normal:

This may sound like a dumb question but why are you covering the Power Steering Pump?? The 6637 and the alternator I can understand and I do cover but have never covered the PS pump.

There is a small vent hole on top of the cap that water can get into. Don't feel bad, I don't cover mine either.

Stupid filter at work, can't see the photo. Oh well, it can wait until tonight. Care to elaborate on the "boost leak happening or about to happen" part? I've done the CCV mod, but I've only owned the truck for about a month/1000 miles and it was stock when I got it (that lasted about week )

Not much to elaborate on really. If oily residue is present, it is leaking out of the hose/tube area. Air is considered a fluid where flow is concerned so it logically follows that it too can leak at the same place. The oil makes the hose soft and slick which makes it that much harder to seal correctly.

This may not be a big leak, if any at all, but after a while it can get bigger or the hose can blow off under high boost conditions.

Thanks for the help. I just cleaned mine up for the first time since the truck was new in 2003. I was impressed with how well the simple green cut through that grime. Thanks for the help

Nice job Rhodester; both on the before and after photos as well as the most excellent cleaning job. I will be doing mine in the next week or two; got great tips from this post as well as others. What did you use for the hoses?

Thanks.I just used the turtle wax brand vinyl and tire cleaner on the hoses. It comes in a green pump spray bottle.

Gunk

How come no one uses Gunk engine degreaser? I know it works better than SG in removing grease.

Thanks..

Neil
