Home Network How To?

Here is what I want to do. I have a lap top and a desktop PC. I want to be able to share files between the two through my home network. How do I do this? My lap top is wireless (with ability to go ethernet if I have to to get this to work) My desktop is hooked up to a linksys wireless router that is fed from my DSL modem. Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks

Technically all you have to do is go to the properties on whichever folders you want to share and click the "share" checkbox. First, put a WPA password on your router so that no one else can get to your files, printer etc. I also have a firewall on my computers that allow me to input IP address of any device I want to let access my stuff, if no IP address, than no access. There are other things you can do, and I am sure others will chime in with those later.

I have tried this I have even gone throught the "set up a home network" thing and still nothing. Am I doing something wrong?

Are they in different rooms?

You can use an USB patch cord an ethernet cable ?
or
Do you have the Linksys wireless card for the laptop to receive the signal?

Either that or hardwire it from the router.

What OS's are they both ?

I just went through this -- maybe this will help.

I run XP on my desktop and laptop. The cable from my DSL goes to the wireless router and then to my desktop.

I set things up following the router instructions, and I could find the internet from my laptop, but that was all.

So, I went through the network wizard crap -- starting with my desktop. On XP, this calls for you to make a file and run it on your laptop. It also suggests that you name your wireless net. I named mine the same thing that I named my internet wireless.

Still no ability to see 'shared files' . I could see the network, but it always said thay the administrator had denied access ( I did not !)

Finally found something on the laptop network properties that said something like 'allow wireless file sharing -- or networks' something like that. But, it was a checkbox to ALLOW wireless. I had scanned several books about wireless nets -- none of them mentioned this little tidbit.

After that, we had liftoff.

When I still worked, I was involved with computers and electronics. It seems to me that Windows favors scattered and odd methods to get things done. Plus, they change things with each version -- often for the worse. These days they're big on the 'wizards' that don't really tell you what they're doing. In my case, you'd think that the wizard would have set the wireless config -- but, that would probably be too logical.

Sorry about the rant, I found my adventure quite frustrating. Good luck in your quest. Also, please do check your signal strength, and your security settings. My router suggested that I change to some Star Trek capable security, and this required me to set up some information on the laptop.

Computers, where would we be without them,

My lap top has wirless built into it so i run it off of wireless but I can hook it up to ethernet if I have to. Most of my cpu work is done in the living room (that is where my desktop is) so it wouldn't be any burdern to run it off of ethernet but would be nice to use it wireless. My desktop is running Windows XP Professional and my laptop is just running Windows XP.

In your router properties you can set the rules for the Laptop's IP number so only it can receive a signal instead of other people in the area

So the laptop has the Linksys module in it to talk to the router ?

You share folders by right clicking on the folder ICON that you wish to share then click SHARING and make type in the rules
