Hi,I had a Maqnaflow and 2.25 duals installed at a local shop . All welded in one piece with no clamps.Nice rumble but not that loud at all . If you bring both pipes out the right you wont have long pipes and lots of bending. Also It can be dropped out in minuits if repairs are needed . I say keep it simple . Pat

JR, got good underside photos of the whole exhaust? What you and Pat have done is EXACTLY what I want to do.
Pat, was that a DIDO muffler you used? (Can't tell from the photos) Was that a custom bend job behind the muffler for the exit pipes, and for what purpose were the bends so different?
I really liked what I saw, and what I heard on JR's truck. I want the rumble, but not obnoxiously loud until I start gouging it beside some idiot that speeds up when I start pass them on the interstate. I have neighbors that probably wouldn't appreciate me knocking out their windows.
How much cab rumble did that cause with the shorter pipes? I've already got some increase because of the FR shorties into a stock Y and everything else. Makes the heat sheild above the cat buzz like crazy at certain RPM too. Drives me nuts. That's gotten progressively worse since I put the shorties on there. Gonna have to break down and drill the rivets out and put some screws in I guess.
My take on it is, make the exhaust larger (2.5" dual) , and dump it earlier. Going from a single 2.25 dump to a total of 5" should get some low-end grunt back. Eventually, I'll throw on some 1.7 rockers and gasket match the lower intake and heads, but they're iron heads on my '92 meaning some long hard work. I'm saving that for a re-build when she just won't go no more, or when I can put her in the garage and leave her there for a while. Gotta get rid of one or two before that, though.

It is a Magnaflow stainless di and do muffler to keep the low eng power .The extra bend was for added clearence for the spring hangerbecause I wanted it as far back as it could be. The sound is close to the same as JR's .The 2.25 size #14385 is to keep the sound mellow (lifetime warrentee). The muffler shop said any bigger and the noise and cab drone will increase. It also has a rear o2 sensor fitting welded in with a sensor installed but a resistor was installed inline to avoid any chance of a code.We decided flowmaster or dual glasspacks would have been louder which I cant have since I go to work at 1am and respect my neighbors right to sleep .It gets fairly loud passing and on a hill but at least I can still hear the cd player.Smooth rumble at idle .Cab noise increased but I drive past police everynight and never had a cop pull me over for it. .Anyway for me it's perfect.Pat

thx for the idea with my air filter and air tubes flareside, im am gonna do that. i was also thinking about putting exhaust dumps on right after my manifolds or perhaps true dual with 40 flowmasters

Good details, and sounding even more like what I'm hunting. I have a company car for leaving at 0100 if I have to. (That other manufacturer) So, my mod will be more for personal and "reasonable" time of day usage. I just didn't want it blowing out windows unless I romped on it.
Unfortunately, I'll have to rig up the DIDO muffler with some flex or something before I take it to a muffler shop to get the down pipes (and crossover) made. The caveat there will be sealing the flex on the collectors, and approximating the bend needed. I want to get rid of that really nasty bend on the left bank for the cross-over. That looks like the pipe size is dropped down to nearly 1.5". While we don't have inspections in AL, EVERY muffler shop around here knows it's illegal to tamper with a "functional" emissions control system, and won't touch cats unless they put the original back on, or replace it. If it doesn't have 'em when you drive in, they're guilty of nothing, and will typically build what you want. My FR shorties have bungs for O2 sensors in both banks, but I only need the one in the right bank ('92 SD engine). Unfortunately, that will probably screw with the sensing of all 8 lungs, but will be better than nothing there. I thought about getting a junk Y from a yard, and having a 2.25 or 2.5 Y made by a shop with the same but improved bends with an extra foot or so of pipe, fit that myself, then have them complete the job with the tail pipes out the side. I've learned the hard way, if you want something done your way, you better stay in the loop.
This sounds like a good tax return project that'll leave me with some cashola for home improvement projects as well. It's all about the balancing act, ya know?
My Pacesetter headers required the exhaust down pipes to have a 2.5 flange instead of the stock 2.25. I just hung the stock exhaust with the completely {plugged up } cats and rusted off air tube from bolts. And drove into the shop. The drop bend you dont like is to keep from melting the spring bushing or rattling on the bracket .It cant be seen unless I just drove over you backwards. If you were move the exit foward you could do without it .A 96 has obd2 so it has 3 o2's and a air pump tube . It was cheaper to have it made than buy the parts and do it myself this time. Another tid bit on size http://www.magnaflow.com/07techtips/faq/question10.asp
I got a flowmaster 40 dido. Here are some pics.
I got no cats so it sounds good. Where you see the square flange is where I hook the stock cat up for inspection.
