Antifreeze?

I had my Radiator flushed about 3 months ago at Ford. When I left the shop, I noticed the antifreeze was just a hair above the min. Well, now its just slightly below the min. and I want to add to it. Can I use PEAK Green Antifreeze? Right now, theres Green Antifreeze in there. I remember reading not to mix different color antifreezes.

Would the PEAK Green be okay?

Just get some standard green stuff and top it off. You should be able to find it in 50/50 jugs to make it easy. I don't know if Peak is green or not, but standard Prestone or Xerex is.

i am surprised you didn't have them add the gold stuff when they did the flush. do a search and you will find a lot of threads regarding antifreeze. but Joe is right, just get some more green stuff to top it off or a little water (it's not that much).

make sure you use additive for the green stuff....I learned this awhile back, continued use of the green anti-freeze can cause cavitation in your cylinder walls when the additive isn't used. In other words.....PINHOLES! Not good.

I wouldn't use the prestone junk but zerex and peak are both good. Remeber to check your SCA levels after this has had a chance to mix in as the car type coolants lack the SCA already mixed in. Also use distilled water when you mix your coolant so you don't put any minerals in the system. Minerals will come out of solution and plate out on the cores plugging them up.

Get your a test strip kit for testing the SCA additive. This is important to maintain the proper level.. too much, not good... too little not good.. Not of this is necessary with the Gold or Red types of coolant..

There is nothing wrong with Prestone. Prestone, Peak, & Zerex all work the same, all go down to the same temps, and all have the same boil over protection at the same temps (assuming the mix is the same %)

Buy whichever you find on sale.

Personally, I flushed & went with Fleetrite ELC 100%. I just got tired of watching the additive condition.

There is actually a very real problem with the Prestone coolant. They lack a chemical package to prevent corrosion. All the other major and most minor brands run a chemaical mix that are similiar to each other except Prestone. Prestone uses an oil additive that causes the corosion deposits to clump together when they occur and when the move through the cooling system they plug your heater core and radiator core. The other brands run a chemical additive package that prevents the corrosion from occuring. All you have to do is ask for the MSDS for the brands and see what is in the coolant and you will see the difference. Unless Prestone has recently changed the formulation all it does for you is prevent freezing of the cooling system and nothing more.

I will have to agree with Stormy above after researching the web today.. It looks like Prestone does not contain Dipotassium Phosphate (not listed on their MSDS) which is a corrosion inhibiter.. Peak and Napa contains this DKP.. Copied the following from the web:

Dipotassium phosphate (DKP) is frequently used in the manufacture of antifreeze, acting as an anti-corrosion agent in car radiators and other equipment. DKP helps to keep the pH stable at around 9, thereby reducing the risk of corrosion

Yes, I am aware of the test strips and additive. Actually, where do you guys find your test strips at? None of the Local Ford Dealers carry them.

Thanks for the replies though!

Any parts shop will carry them, NAPA, Carquest, etc. $12-16 for a bottle of 50. The service department at my local Ford store uses the Carquest ones instead of the Motorcraft ones.
