What do I have?
I got a D1VE block. and D3VE-A2A heads. When i had my pan off I noticed the crank was all scuffed in one spot like something went out in it... or it got shaved to be balanced..I am not real sure...also this thing revs high..it was loaded up with fule one day and I was pissed cause it had not wanted to start so i finally got it running and revved it up and I about hit 7500RPM. when I shift it I can shift comfortable at about 4300. I have never really had it maxed while driving. I am not sure if it is a 429 or a 460? is there any way I could tell from the outside? this is an old motor that blows blue smoke once and a while and burns oil like non-other..I added some restore stuff and have 200 miles on it and am waiting til 500 to see if there is any difference..when I put it to the floor it will get up and goooo...and when I shift the front drops and it still puts you back...Problem is i cant tell anything on this motor..like what has been done with it in the past...so hope this info can hopefully put together its background a little more...
Also I know small blocks tend to be louder than big blocks...How loud can you mkae a big block I want to have the loudest truck around and will run straights if they dont mess things up too bad.. any suggestions on exhaust I can cut and weld so any ideas will help..
it has 30" cherry bombs now and stock manifolds...but I have in my garage 18" packs and headers ready to go on when i figure out how i am going to route to make it the loudest possible..
How louder will headers and 18's make it?
thanks alot for any info placed

Don't worry about what you have because the way your treating that big block you are surely going end up with a big pile of $#!^, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!! I mean no offense but brother you must have ALOT more money than brains to run a 429-460(probably stock) to 7500 rpms, THEN shift. You cannot pour enough Restore in that motor to keep it living long with that kind of abuse. The Ford 429-460 is a DAMN GOOD motor whether stock or not, and to see a person like yourself trying to tear one up with the way you drive makes me wish I could reach through this phone line and beat a little sense into you. As for how loud you want this vehicle to be, just keep up your drivig habits and you'll have, for a few brief moments, the loudest truck in your area.

I never said I run to 7500 THEN shift or run it that high daily...I simply stated one day...ONE TIME....I reved it to 7500 the tach needle stayed there for less than 10th of a second..NOT LONG at all went right up and right down..If I BARELY tap my pedal it will shoot too 4 grand....I dont know if this has been rebuilt there is alot of put together parts on it...I think only the block is stock everthing else has a different part #.
As far as money goes...I got this 460 with a 4sp and a 85 ford with rebuilt x-fercase and new rear axle...for 900$...I had an 85 diesel that I got (ripped off) had a bad motor. blown headgasket and the list went on diesel ran but not too good...I live in the west (idaho) and I assume it was a ranch truck...I converted my diesel automatic too a 460 manual in a semi-heated non-insulated shop took me about 3 months...had to change motor mounts, wiring harness, and changed most the gaskets on the 460, also painted the block dark blue and added several new things....now thats alot of work for a 17 year old...going to school...with no job accept in the summer..
I'm not on hear to make enemy's....I have pics of the 460 being dropped in and pics of the motor and the 2 trucks if you want to see them...I will have to scan them....takes ALONG time to do so and i am making a custom headache rack for the ford at school with a friend for a project....But I will try tomorrow..
PS....Do you have AOL IM? if so whats your s/n?

Guys, I've read posts from time to time that I got a chuckle from but this takes the cake. I laughed for half an hour after reading this. In answer to your question "What Do I Have". Best I can tell is a lot of destructive tendencies. A ring and head job and you will have an engine that will do anything you want with out ever seeing more than 4 grand on the tach.

Awww, c'mon guys. Don't ya'll remember being young, dumb and....?
He is a kid having a good time tearing his stuff up. One of the truly great things about being a teenager is not having to be as responsible as an adult. There will be plenty of time in his future for acting responsibly and taking care of his stuff.
That being said, if it were one of my boys doing that to a truck, and probably have to break a boot off.

You have a beast. It is a 429, but not a really whole engine. The block is a 1971 casting, the heads are 1973 casting. This indicates that something was wrong with this engine before and parts were used to fix it.

All that is known for sure is that the engine belongs to the "385" series of Ford engines. The casting #'s tell us in what year that these parts were first produced, not the actual year of use. The D1VE block was originally produced in 1971, but with minor changes it continued to be used long after '76. These "changes" would show up on the casting #, Ford changed the deck height a few times in the early '70's from 10.30"('68-'70), to 10.310" ('70 1/2-'71), then to 10.322"('72 on) and these changes would show up in te casting #'s as D1VE-A, D1VE-AB, D1VE-ABC or D1VE-B and etc. The heads you have were originally produced in '73, but were used many years later as well.
You won't know for sure what you have until you can accurately measure the crank's stroke to deternine if it's a 429 or a 460, since the heads and blocks will interchange with both engines. The 429 was produced from '68-'72, the 460 was produced from '69-'97 or so. there were 429's built later than '72 , but these had modifications to make them suitible for use in heavy duty trucks(F-700's & up).
I hope this helps.

hello you have a good combination there it will work good for many years about it loading up with fuel dose it do this often and if it dose you should really overhaul your carb gas will wash out your rings and break down oil real bad which will severly shorten the life of your motor
P.S. if you decide to over haul this motor pay special att. to the 1# main journal the 71 429 had a small problem the oil gallery coming from the cam was not centered like it should be
when you overhaul you my need to modify the bearing
i live in kettle fall not to far from you

I also have a "385"series engine and not sure what it is .D1VE 8015 A2B on the block casting and D3VE-A2A on the heads. I know a lot about the FE but not these. does the 460 head have oval ports or both (429-460) ?? Iwas once told the 429 had oval ports.
What do I have?
By the last numbers you gave you have a 68-78 429-460 block. the heads are from 72-74 91.4cc w/ a 2.08 intake valve, 1.66 exhaust. the port sizes are INT. 2.18x1.87 and EXH. 1.99x1.30.
Hope this information is helpfull.

Hello 67f250,
What you have is most likely a garden variety, mid 70's 460. Let's start with the block numbers, D1VE-6015-A2B. The D1VE denotes decade (A=40's, B=50's, C=60's, D= 70's and so on), year of that decade, vehicle part was intended for (V=Lincoln), and lastly division that produced the part (E=engine division). 6015 denotes the base casting number, which in this case is a block casting number. Lastly the A2B designates this part as having some minor modifications of the engine block, Ford changed the deck heights on the "385" series to reduce compression. If you look closer at the casting numbers on the block you will find the actual production date code, it will be a three or four digit code. It denotes the actual year, month and day of production. The first character is a number, which denotes what actual year block was produced. The second character tells us the month of the year (A=January, B=Febuary, C=March and so on except for the letter I which is omitted). The last character(s) tells us the actual day of the month.
The head number D3VE-A2A tells us this head was designed and produced for the '73 model year, but since there is an additional prefix after the casting number, that tells us that there were minor changes to allow use of head on later engines after the '73 model year, but the basic design is unchanged.
The 429 and the 460 passenger car heads are the same, there are differences once you get into the CJ, SCJ, & of course BOSS and police type heads. There are some design changes that occured while both engines were being produced (429 was produced from '68 - '72, 460 was produced from '69 - '97). These changes included addition of emission control ports, valve train changes (valve length, rocker arm, push rod and head attachment). There were other changes as well.
If you need any more information that deals with the "385" series just E-mail me and I'll be happy to help out as will others in this forum.
I hope this helps in any way.

Well, today i tore the engine down and verified that it is a 460. the heads were cast the 13th of april 77 and the block was cast on the 31st of march 77. and i also measured the stroke of 3 7/8 or (3.85). I do know how to read part #'s the 4 digit # on the casting #'s are for a finished part. Thanx for the help.

Sorry for the long-winded designation of casting codes, I must have misunderstood your ? As for the port diffrences between production 429's & 460's, all had oval shaped exhaust and intake ports, but the intakes were more rounded(almost a circular port). There were some design changes that made these ports either larger(usually with larger valves), in the case of the CJ, SCJ, Police & Boss heads or smaller, in the case of the 460 EFI heads(E7TE). I hope this helps out.
