1st off, Hello new to the board. Anyhow so the other day i get in my truck (2001 F250) ,start it up and put it in gear and notice the overdrive light on the shifter is flashing. The next day i checked to see if i had any codes with my programer and it came up as P0720 it said it was the output shaft speed sensor circuit. Anyone know what this is and where it is ?
It's on the rear universal, on top (front side). It's about a $20 part and a fairly common failure. Try taking it out and cleaning the scuzz off it first. Might just be dirty. If not, it's a $20 fix.
The VSS failures are on the rise. Getting as bad as the CPS. Antilock Brake Sensors should be a real safety issue. There will be a recall, in about ten years.
Thanks for the help guys. I just wrote down what my programmer said it was. So its really called the VSS. I see where it is so it looks like an easy fix.

Very easy. Should take you 5-10 minutes. May be a little tight getting out. Just wiggle around a bit.
btw - Welcome. This site is a great resource for our trucks.
I thought the output speed sensor was on the transmission an 07xx code is a trans code
This was taken from another site:
VSS is on the rear diff, and does feed the instrument cluster.
OSS is on the Tcase (at the top, toward the back) but isn't installed on all vehicles. When installed, it feeds the computers.
They are the same part number sensor, just different locations and different purposes.

probly frome same site
P0720 is a OSS Sensor circuit Malfunction code. This is what it says in the shop manual:
Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor
The output shaft speed (OSS) sensor is a magnetic pickup that provides transmission output shaft rotation speed information to the powertrain control module.
The output shaft speed (OSS) sensor is mounted externally on the top of the transmission case. The PCM uses the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor signal to help determine electronic pressure control (EPC) pressure, shift scheduling and torque converter clutch (TCC) operation.

Ok now im confused. LOL So it on the trans. not the rear end ?
So the OSS sensor is on the Transfer Case of vehicles equipped with an Automatic Transmission? I have the ZF6 and I did not have a sensor on my transfer case, not including the indicator connector.
It's on the DIFF! I'd go out and snap a pic of it, but I already put my truck in the garage for the night. It's way too hard to get to because my wife's truck is in there with it.
