My motor is knocking bad but still runs great. I want to buy a junk motor and rebuild it so when mine goes, I will have on ready. The junk yard has one for $350 but he said it smoked bad but ran. Is it worth it? Anything I should check before I buy it.
Also, should I buy all new injectors and glow plugs for the rebuilt motor? What else should I replace with new?
Personally I would look for a 6.9L from 86-87 for a rebuild project. The 7.3L is already bored out to the limit, I am not a proponent of sleeved motors.
Other options depend on if you have a turbo or plan on adding one. Upgraded head studs allow you to go to higher boost pressures. IP from a turbo model with matching injectors to take advantage of the potential power gains, for not a huge investment. But if your 7.3L is running well the IP and injectors from it could be transferred over, and just a "basic" rebuild.
My truck is a 1994 ford E 350 Box truck. It has just over 200k on the motor. I know the injectors and glow plugs have been changed before. I know that I may have some dead glow plugs beacuse it won't start without starting fluid on cold mornings. I live in FL, so clold is below 60. I posted a while back on the knock, but we could not figure it out. I have an auto trans. I checked the fly wheel from under the truck very well. No cracks. I drove by a diesel shop and they listened to the truck and said it's a rod. I have good oil pressure and good power for a non turbo. Does not use very much oil or smoke. Idles smooth and with no probs. Just knocks like an S.O.B. Very loud. My FIPL sensor went, and I am changing it right now with some help from some other posts.
I think its an internal prob. because I put a gallon of Lucas and the knock went away for a few days. I have put 13k on the truck since I bought it and its been knocking since before I bought it. The knock is getting worse and I can't afford to have my truck down for weeks while the motor is rebuilt. Is $350 for a junk motor good?
Ideally, I was hoping to find a junked 7.3 and put new bearings, rings and seals and have the heads refreshed. Is this too optimistic? I was hoping to re-use the cam, crank and pistons. Maybe new lifters. What do yall think?
