Seeking 460 build recommendations
I have a 70 Mach1 with a 351C/C6. As time permits, check it out: http://www.geocities.com/snekrs_mach1
I've done every bit of work on this with the exception of the paint. While I know the Clevelands exceptionally well, I've still got quite a bit to learn about the 460.
I've got an opportunity to purchase a set of magged DOVE-C heads for $500 from a trustworthy acquaintance. The heads will require a 3-angle, seals, springs, retainers, and locks. The 2.25/1.75 valves come with the heads. This is a good price...right ? I intend to port them, but only as much as required to clear the exhaust port of fastener humps.
I can purchase a rebuildable 460 for $100 and BB C-6 for another $200 from my local junky. I'll rebuild the C-6.
The total cost of conversion is likely to cost $800, which covers motor mounts, BB C-6 crossmember, headers, and a larger radiator. I may try my existing Griffin radiator before parting with the $400 for a larger one. In short, I need to be cost conscious, so unforuntately the stroker kits are likely to be put on ice for the time being.
I'll be pulling the MSD ignition system of my Cleveland and installing on the 460.
With a set of DOVE-C heads and an intended compression ratio of 9.5-9.8:1, what type of carb, intake, and cam, and gears would you folks suggest for a 75% street/ 25% strip car that is approximately 3450lbs ? I don't care about idle quality -or- gas mileage.
I expect people will have differences in opinions and I truly want to hear everyone's suggestions regardless of how ridiculous -or- costly they may be.
Many, many thanks in advance.

1. Don't forget to budget for a higher stall street converter...probably the biggest bang for the buck. You can drop a half second E.T. for around $300.
2. A vacuum secondary carb will give you more torque and usually works the best with an automatic equiped car.
3. Definetly call a cam mfg. You can't run a lot of duration with only 9.5-9.8 compression.

Ok, that is a bit pricey for those heads. I am particuarily fond of them. As far as a cam, I really don't know what to tell you because if you are going to drag race periodically you'll probably want something slightly radical. I wouldn't go with an Edelbrock Performer RPM, instead I would use just a straight Performer because your not going to push the 460 as high as you did your Cleveland. The straight performer will make good power up to 5,500 RPM's and you won't want to go to much higher than that. Do you know what your going to do as far as piston's are concerned? I like Keith Black hypereutectic, but a set of forged would be better. Hope that helps.

I used 3 thousanths clearance on mains and about 2 and a half on the rods, Stock CJ oil pump, modified stock pan that held about 10 qts oil.
This engine ran for two years of hard mud bog racing. One time on a video tape I saw the shift light on for over a minute(6400 rpm)! We had no failures of any kind with the engine and it ran exceptionally good. I was so impressed I'm a Big Block Ford fan to this day! The Predator carb always worked super too, I rebuilt it before each season and that was it. Adjust the idle one time and forget it! We used a stock Ford Duraspark distributor with an MSD 6 AL box. This engine is still running now and the owner has only adjusted the valves and changed the oil!
We used a 4000 stall TCI torque converter and normally turned the engine about 6500 rpm. I thought this thing would be tough on bearings, but it sure wasn't hard on anything! I feel that you could build this combo for about $2500 and I think it would make 500HP easily. I didn't have a dyno at the time but I would have loved to have tested that engine.
I was just curios if your truck was ever featured at off-road.com ? if it was i loved that truck i built a 460 pretty close to your spec but instead of dove c heads i used police interceptors with 2.19 intake and 1.7 exhaust and i had everything shaved to give me 11.2 compression with the kb137's
i was shooting for 500HP and had it dynod and it came to 560 hp and almost 600ft lb of torque.
