temporary boost boost?

My truck made an extra 4psi of boost yesterday morning (38* outside, burr!). Going home was back to 'normal' (56*). Short of reading some of gene's physics lessons, should a truck make more boost when its colder?

I've had gauges installed for a few years and the truck has never done this before. The POS is short on boost, and seeing the extra boost got my hopes up. Maybe some 'bad' electrons were ousted from the engine control system........

What boost #s are you talking, and is it regular driving or WOT.

here's the WOT numbers;

'what it used to be, what think it should be' w/ hi perf tune
21-22 psi (1200*+ EGT pre turbo)

'what i get now after 3 months of testing trying to fix' w/ hi perf tune
18-19psi (1000* max EGT)

'what I get after 3 months of testing trying to fix' STOCK tune
10-12psi (800* max EGT)

yesterday I saw 23-24psi, so highest I have seen gauge go. temps no more than 1000. wondering if it is just dry, dense air.

Looks like the trend a fuel pump will start doing when it is on the way out.

Justin, check all you boots, if you are loosing boost like that you could have a leak in one of them. See if you can tighten them a little or take them off and clean them if they are full of gunk. Also look for soot on you up-pipes.

i have a 2000 f-350 with a stock everything except a ts performance 6 position 140hp chip and with the waste gate plugged in i see 24 max and with the waste gate unplugges and capped off i have seen 35psi but most the time it stays round 30-32psi but i have seen it hit 28psi with the waste gate plugged in and i guess it just takes the map sensor a second to catch it and releases it and it drops back down to 22 or so. but on stock i see 15-18psi no problem.

ts-stroker, I sure hope you have a set of gauges. I can't amagine what your EGT running that kind of chip. Do you have intake, exhaust?

Thanks for the inputs. I'm out of things to check (thanks to all the folks here on FTE for help in the past) why my truck has low boost but my question was more about why I saw the increase just one time. was it the air conditions or maybe its a loose wire/ intermittent sensor?

I will be taking the truck to a diesel shop when I have time. I've poked and probed everything under the hood I can. I thinks it's time for an AE or someone who works on PSDs for a living. Once it runs right stock I'll swap in a DP tuner, and live up to my FTE name.

I hope it's not much wrong with it. Let us know what the problem is.

Im not thinking that the cold, denser air would lead to more boost. However, on the other side perhaps because it is more dense and you do actually get more in the cylinder, then maybe there is more coming out as exhaust and driving the turbo more?
Sorry, I am no GENE-ious. But I do miss his mind boggling info!!

Yes, colder air will show up as higher boost. I see that here as well -- when it's in the 30s, I can easily get ~27ish PSI. In the summer, I see only about 25. This is with the WW and wastegate disconnected. I believe one (or several) of Gene's graphs confirms that.

I believe that I believe Gene's graphs. But in no way can I confirm what they confirm.

Correct me if Im wrong but doesnt the PCM advance the timing for colder oil temps ? This could lead to a cleaner more efficient burn as I think we all know that Ford is VERY reserved when it comes to timing . Couldn't this advanced timing translate into higher boost?
