460 CARB IGNITION SET UP

I have a stock, except for that cam, just rebuilt [20 K.], 460 in a 78 4x4 that replaced a 400 and kept the C-6 transmission. Its my driver and I need dependability every day. With the Edelbrock intake and carb I am not confident that my stock vacuum advance distributor (off of the 400) and computer module are working properly in this combination. Also I have heard opinions regarding the Edelbrock/Carter carb and that Holly is a better choice but mileage may suffer. I don't want a racer just all the mileage, dependability and performance possible from a big block. I would prefer to retain the intake. Is their anyone that has had any experience with this situation that can help me? What is a good combo and how do I set up? How can I get a big bang for small bucks?

Craig

The Edelbrock/Carter carbs. (vac. sec.) are a good set up.
The Holleys require constant readjustments, just their nature.
I don't know what cam you are using, but don't go too wild (dur./lift) when using it in a truck. You want to achieve
as much "Torque", bottom-end, Seat-of-the Pants, as possible.
I would keep the cam under 218deg.dur. @ .050" Int.
and .506" lift.
A good dual pattern cam works wonders for a ford engine.
( small or big blk.).

There's nothing, and I mean nothing, like the "TORQUE" of
a Ford 460ci.

Have Fun!!

460 CARB IGNITION SET UP

LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-00 AT 12:03 PM (EST)[p]DIR:

Thanks for the cam info, Im using a mild grind, but thats taken care of, and after what you said about the carb Ill leave it on. Now how about the dist?
Im using a stock re-built electronic/vac advan unit and question the vac port on the edelbrock carb. The venture vacume dosent seam to work like the stock carb did. Excessive vacume is present all the time not just when the carb is opened. This is causing excessive advance at idle and when cold, and also making it diffacult to set the timing. Ive set the advance limit alan screw inside the vac advance port on the dist but it still dosent seam right.

After I resolve another problem (see "Cold Start Miss" posted on this forem) Im planning to have it tuned by a pro but before I take it in I want to make sure that the dist is compatable with the carb. The bottom line here is, will this dist work in this situation or should I scrap it, and if so what do I use? Again this is not a race truck, its my driver.

Thanks again,
Craig

Ok, there are 2 `small` ports on the edlebrock one on the left and one on the right.
The one on the right (passengers side) is `ported vacuum, for the dist advance.
the one on the right (drivers side) is Manifold-Constant Vacuum

You should `see vacuum to the dist advance at aprox 1,200-1,500 rpm with the left port

What edlebrock carb are you using?

Sounds like you are on the right track..
ps: check your TOTAL advance(like at 3,000) Not all rebuilts are alike!!

Had the same problem. Ended up with an early model dual vacume advance,MSD varable timing that replaces the stock dura spark box, plugs rite in. You can retard or advance at youre discretion. Same set up Edlebrock intake,750cfm Carter,r/v cam, .030 over 460. It worked for me. Good luck

If you get the offroad springs for an edelbrock (which are a little stiffer) that could help the performance aspect a little but you have to readjust your floats.

just a thought!
